Whilst I like the sentiment of promoting the good it isn’t apt in this latest instance of mass English fan behaviour mate. It’s widespread, it’s continual and it seems to be getting worse. There is a toxic culture amongst so many going the game and their national team energises the worst out of them. Condemnation and punishment is the only language they will understand. England fans need to own them rather than deflect.
It is always apt to promote positive stories, regardless of the situation.
Manchester, being one. I for one am uplifted by what happened at the Rashford Mural and it should be highlighted alongside what happened at Wembley, not instead of, but together, to show the difference in people, to highlight how idiotic those morons look compared to good natured and morally intelligent people.
It is not deflecting by talking about positive things, as mentioned, in relation to the negative things. I don't believe anybody here, in the last few days has ignored it. I mentioned it before, it could be seen as a defence mechanism to say 'it is the minority', etc. It is a case of I am a football supporter and I am not associated with these morons.
If somebody comes up to me in the street and has a go at me for being an England supporter and stating what happened at Wembley, do I just be submissive and apologise or do I stand for my right to not be associated with these people, do I stand there and highlight the good in other people, do I proclaim that I am not one of them. That is not deflecting, that is basically standing up for every good fan, every good person in the country who also should not be associated with them, who are also (factually) still in the majority. Very much the same as you would do by shouting that you are scouse not English because like it or not you are geographically English and people will associate you with them just as much as me
