I have mixed feelings on the window. We definitely needed Lukaku to redeem the day. Without his (loan) signing I don't think people are too happy with the Fellaini for McCarthy/Barry swap.
I like Barry, still a good player, will do a job, but wages too high. He'll provide good cover for when Gibson is inevitably out injured and will be able to slot in when Barkley needs a breather.
Don't know too much about McCarthy. Is he a box to box midfielder or more of a defensive mid? Which one do we need more?
Lukaku should shine for us. Granted I've only seen highlights of him, but he seems to be the power presence we need in the box. We have great wingers and amazing outside backs, but look how often no one is on the box for crosses or the cross will hit someones head and go miles over the goal. Hopefully that will change now.
Off course, time will tell. I'm a little reluctant to call it a great window because our two most exciting additions are just loans and we lost the man that was absolutely unplayable at times.

Alcaraz has recent injury problems yes, but not exactly a regular sicknote. Could do without this over the top dismissal of new players. Other than that I would like another new younger ball playing centre back in. Lets see in the next two windows. For now though we are all good.
By the way, didn't realise that Alcaraz got sent off in the last Copa America for taking a swing and a kick at Lucas from across the park.

My 11 year old lad asked me this morning who we'd signed, and I reeled off the names. When I said Gareth Barry, he thought I'd said Gareth Bale. The look of joy on his face was a picture, as he asked me excitedly, "WE'VE SIGNED GARETH BALE?" Ah, the innocence of youth, eh?
He'll be disappointed when he sees Gareth Barry attempt to fly down the wing mate!

Yep, it's hard to imagine two players with more contrasting styles than Barry and Bale!
Bale used to to be a decent left midfielder with a cracking delivery and shot on him. Honestly! Over ten years ago like but thats how he broke through for Villa.

He started as a LB didn't he? He'd need a scooter to get down the flanks now like.
I thought it was left midfield, that's certainly where I first noticed him but as with such things, I'm usually wrong lid.
..I might be wrong, but I thought he made his debut against us as a 17y-o centre back. It was first game of the season and we drew 0-0. He was up against Duncan Ferguson and was outstanding. He's never had pace so that shouldn't be an issue now. I'm an Osman fan because I think he provides something no others can. This is no longer the case with Barry, as he also plays that similar little role linking back to front.

Our first 11 is arguably not stronger. The biggest problem we will have is next year when Lukaku goes, and we can't afford to buy him, because we have massively overpaid for McCarthy.
