Whatever happened to normal names ?

A teacher I used to work with used to plat a game. At the start of each year, without looking at past performance orvanybother data he would assign a (secret) predicted grade to his kids based on their first names.
The Dwaynes, Biancas and Chardonnays never got good grades, the Toms, Harriets and Edwards faired better.

He was uncannily accurate in the predictions when the test results came in.

Did he predict a Wayne, would become the all time top goal scoring player for England and Manchester United ? And a multi, multi millionaire ?

the former are more typical working-class names and the latter more upper-middle...not too hard to then guess what the average grades will be...funnily enough i come from a working class background, my grades weren't good and my first name i think is more common in working-class families than not.

I'm sure at one point people were complaining about the lack of Æþelræds, Æþelstans and Oswalds, instead taking strange French names like William and Richard.
People using place names as first names is pretty common, and has been for decades at least. There's villages called Winston in Suffolk and County Durham for instance. Lee is similarly derived from a place name.

that's brilliant! i'd love to have received a wizarding staff from a classmate. what a cool kid you have there, mate

what's normal, tho'...especially in these globalised times, many kids today are multi-cultural: my better-looking half is Hungarian, so we've got 3 different nations in all to choose from when thinking about our future kids' names.

personally i'm all for exotic unique first names, unless they're intentionally weird like Zappa's kids: Moon Unit & Dweezil are a step too far out there, granted.

Judge and jury.

These two names are of siblings in the SAME family who are friends of a friend. I feel really bad for them! I don't understand parents sometimes.

The son's name is Vandal and the daughter's name is Zeppelin. Seriously???:dodgy:

The name issue was bad over here, but I think we are turning a corner. Hopefully!

I was watching a kids game a year or so back and some mother started shouting at her little darling, Tarquin. I nearly pissed my pants. Sure it's an old, classic name but really?

..there’s also odd ways of spelling names. I always think it’s a problem if you have to spend your entire life spelling your Christian name to people on the phone etc. Parents think it’s trendy, but it’s a bit silly really.

..... I came across a "Sarah" the other day who spelt her name Cera.........

Had a mate in work call his son Dartagnon... thought that was bad until my son had a classmate called Cup.
Finally my daughter went to school with a girl named ‘L-A’ .... pronounced Ledasha, FFS!
