Where's the root of Everton's problems?

What causes Everton FC to continuously let themselves and the fans down?
For the past 5 years a lot of money more than ever before has been pumped into this club but we cant seem to get to the next level.

Why is this?

Is the mentality within the club from the top?
Is it Moshiri
Is the DOF (Brands & Walsh)?
Is it the managers?
Is it the players?
Is it the wrong type of players for certain managers styles when they arrive?
Is all of the above combined?

I mean all jokes aside we've had 4 managers and 2 DoF within 5 years that cant be good but how do we fix it?

...and no Ye Ma isn't an option.
Rubbish at football?

  • “It is in the head of the players,” “As a manager you can help the team and select the team, but when the whistle goes you are not the one who plays the ball back. “It’s about giving the players options, but we are scared to play forward. Sometimes there are not enough options for the forwards, but in that case play the ball into the channels instead of the goalkeeper. “We know the fans like us to go forward, not back, back, back. Then it is difficult to create chances."

Ronald Koeman, September 2016,

Maybe we should let them wear their headphones when playing and listen to music. They might feel a bit more motivated listening to Bon Jovi, rather than big Dunc shouting on the sidelines.

For me it's our mentally and identity - on and off the pitch and our previous DOF.

As fans we have this notion that we are a HUGE club which historically we are but we haven't been HUGE for decades.

We have a good history but we keep harpinh back to 80's for comparison purposes which doesn't help any new or future managers. That is not the level we are our have been for 25 years! We are operating on half the revenue, wages and spends than The Super League 6.

Yes I believe we should have the bar set for that level to be Champions but before we get there we have to accept that we are nowhere near the best that level so be acceptance for small graces like a world class manager, new stadium, outstanding fanbase.

Since Moyes, we have had 5 managers who haven't given us any stability due to their tenure being short-lived so we have failed in building on a decade of experience and hard work but this was still unsuccessful in many ways for winning cups or beating rivals.

Moshiri could've been the injection we needed in terms of reaching the next level but recruitment was ultimately our downfall and since then more clubs have leapfrogged us in terms of domestic position.

This season was a huge kick in the teeth after the start we had and these last few games have shafted us royally but we are still seeing calls to sack the Manager. It's ridiculous.

We need to get some stability back and start another rebuild but fully behind Ancelotti, win, lose or draw.

I believe we had a target for European qualification this season and it's very unlikely so we need to use this season that we need to remove players who are not at the level of Everton or a team who have ambitions of European qualification.

Carlo has issued more than enough statements this season on players attitude, standards and what we need to do. We are crying out for a captain too. I love Coleman and Digne but they are not the answer. We need a player who everyone looks up to and has played at the highest level domestically and internationally. I would like James to take this role next season. He is a winner, he inspires everyone and he gets us.

I think he and Brands will be given full permission and funds to tear this squad up and build to be stronger.

I think we all agree that we would love to turf out 9/10 players but it's highly unrealistic but if we could get rid of some and financially take a hit on these dregs, I think we should even if this has an impact on recruitment.

Overall, we need to realign the club with Carlo in mind - bring 3 experience players who walk into our most wanted positions (right back, centre midfield and right wing) and the step up of youth or potential signings to push these players all season. No more 2 goalkeepers on the bench, competition throughout the squad.

Lack of movement and poor quality on the ball.
We have several players with some quality on the ball but not enough. The rest of the players get terrified when a player approaches them and just passes the ball back or sideways. These players are not helped greatly by static players in front of them. When a player is dallying on the ball it normally means that the forward players are not creating space to receive which leads to the inevitable back pass, sideways or hopeful punt. Sheff Utd actually out manouvred us the other day by using space left by us and supporting each other allowing an outlet ball at all times. Our forward players don't work hard enough to find space to facilitate a pass often enough. Off the ball we are worse. We find it difficult to get the ball back and when we do we have very few willing runners to exploit space to build an attack. There is plenty wrong with this side from being static to not having enough ball carriers. Our wingers (wide players) are not great at the dribble at all and more frustrating is poor quality crosses not passing the first man or being totally over hit. The only danger we show centrally from around 25 yds out is from an inform Richie (a rarity these days) or James if people move for him. Nullify James and Richie we have nothing of note in a build up from distance.
I suppose we could go on forever but the most important thing now is that Carlo has become angry with certain players so I expect he will want to bring players with heart, ball skills (for more possession footy) and alternative strikers and Wide player that create for themselves and others.

Pickford, Digne, Mina, Godfrey, James, Allen, Doucoure for me are our best players while Richie and DCL should be our best players but lack enough consistency to convince us. For me the rest can move on (I may have missed a player or 2 out I am not sure). Come on Carlo and Brands get your dump truck ready and your delivery van as it has to be a big summer. Be ruthless

Who was the last player that Everton actually sold for money? I'm struggling to think of anyone since idrissa gueye. Does that kind of explain where the problem lies? The players are poo.

No one gives anyone a bollockimg on the pitch anymore, it’s all nicely nicey, no passion no drive.
Only the games where Dunc was in charge did I see enough passion, yes that long ago.
I’m not advocating Big Dunc as manager but I got the feeling no one on the pitch that day give less than 100% for fear of getting a blast. It’s a shame we haven’t got a captain that does that on the pitch during the game, instead of pointing and blaming others

It is frustrating but we did all understand that it would take a good while to clear out the Walsh and BFS players and replace. We should have a better idea next season and the last should be gone the summer of 2022.
We got a hint early this season but the squad is very thin.

Personally I believe the issues we have had this season are 100% to do with a lack of discipline in the players. When we are away from home with our backs to the wall we have no problem putting in a disciplined defensive performance with occasionally a counter attack that produces a goal (see DCL goals vs xG). However when we play at home we are asked to play more expansively and the discipline cannot be maintained. We have seen defensive errors that have cost us hugely (Spurs?) and midfielders who are constantly out of position or giving the ball away. The players can play, they have a plan and direction from Carlo but the fail to execute in a disciplined way. The 'effort' away seems to be way ahead of the 'effort' at Goodison, which is, I would posit, a further example of the lack of personal discipline. The longer this goes on the harder it will be to eradicate. Make it end tonight!
