Rewind to Autumn 2020 and the entire forum was delighted that Ancelloti / Brands / Moshiri / whoever had just spent £45m on Allan and Doucouré, because they were instantly the two best CMs at the club. After the opening six or seven fixtures, playing in a midfield trio, it was clear that they could both perform extremely well provided that the third CM was at least competent...
I believe that IF we manage to secure someone like Zakaria, Kamara, Guimares or maybe even someone like Knight to be the third CM, we'll see some improvement. The problem is that we spent £60m on Delph, Gomes and Gbamin but not one of them can perform consistently at an even mediocre level for 90 minutes. Worse still is the £45m spent on Sigurdsson who is unavailable: he's not elite in CM, but he could provide the creativity that Allan and Doucouré lack.
We HAVE to start getting recruitment right. And we need to do it now, with a new CM.

Outnumbered, Slow, Allan can't run, Gomez can't tackle and his defensive position is chronic, Doucoure is an athlete but limited football wise... Very little goal threat from all 3, if it's 2 in the middle against better opposition we get outplayed.
It’s incredible how consistently poor out midfield has been over such a long time.
I’d love to just start again but that’s not very viable. Personally I think we need a deep lying defensive mid, shields the back 4 and is comfortable on the ball to take it off the defenders. Allan & Doucouré in front of him playing aggressive destroyer roles.
Obviously that is a clear lack of creativity but we might be able to dominate defensively for once. We have talent forward of the ball in Gray, Rich & DCL & just bought an attacking RB in Patterson. Sign another creative wide fwd and maybe it would work?

I think it is viable. Delph gone this summer,
Gbamin is free to go, we won’t get much.
I think Davies and Gomes are up for sale amd
I can see at least one going by the summer.
Allan gone the following summer. So we will see a big overhaul in the midfield in the next 18months

Even the mf 3 of allan, doucoure and Gomes togather can't dictate the play against a decent pl side, neither have the pace to do so, and when your Central defenders are as bad as you can get, you don't have an option except to play 5 at the back as mf 3 of our current players still leave a lot of gap in the mf due to their lack of pace and commitment. But he should rather try a youngester in alongside doucs, allan, that would be lot better then having 5 at the back or playing allan, doucoure and Gomes togather

When they’ve all been fit and had our full team around them we’ve been well in the mix for top 7 - we only threw it away last season when Doucoure and Allan both kept getting injured and at the start of this season we were right up there until injuries hit.
I think Doucoure is easily good enough to get us to Europe, Allan was regularly in Europe before joining us but is aging so won’t be able to do his thing much longer and Gomes I said was a good bench option, I’d definitely like an upgrade BUT if our team could stay fit and we played a sensible formation then yeah I think we could get top 7 with the current squad.
In the championship, if we insist on choosing two midfielders....
