Depends. Not sure it’s the formation more the personal. Patterson, Godfrey, Mina, Branthwaite. Mykolenko. Allan, Doucoure. Gray, Richarlison, DCL. Will easily get us up the table. Maybe even a new midfielder and an attacker. Added to that lot

yesterday in the analyses of the BBC i think they got it spot on when they said we press but only with half the team. Allan or Gomes were asked to do a high press but the attackers dont do it really.
Adding then that Allan / Gomes are not quick enough they can't recover quickly.
Also we lack a midfielder who is useful with the ball:
Allan is half decent on the ball but not exactly a playmaker
Doucoure is box to box but again no playmaker
Gomes for me can be excellent on the ball but for me his movement is too slow against better opposition.
Best option in the current squad is when for a few games Townsend played as an attacking midfielder/nr 10.

We basically have no back up for Alan or Doucoure. In theory Gbamin and Delph should be their backups, but are always injured. Gomes has never got back to being the same player he was before Son snapped his ankle and Davies is OK, but can’t do what Alan and Doucoure can do. So anytime we are without Alan and Doucoure or one of them is not playing well we are vulnerable.
Gana is supposedly available in this window, I would take him regardless of his age because he is so good as a DM, it would make our other midfielders and defenders look better with him in there.

Because we allowed our best midfielder to go to PSG and tried to replace him with a guy whose played about 4 games in 3 years, then an injury prone glass boy from Man City for £8.5m, then tried a Portugese stroller who cost £20-something-million and sits on the bench as much for Benny as he did for Carlo, then tried to turn Iceland's best pointer into a No8, then tried playing Allan in a midfield two which has never really worked, but we keep doing it anyway.

Doucore and Allan in particular aren’t the problem. As others have said, we go two men against a three man midfield often and we play a system that isn’t based on dominating the midfield.
The issue is- yes, we are missing a third midfielder, but what we are really lacking is depth all over the pitch. Every time someone gets injured it wrecks our season. Check and mate. We will never have a decent season with the current squad unless every player has a spotless injury record. Lots of work to do.
