I think that would be the best option, personally, Fellaini holding and either Pienaar or Osman alongside him. One thing you notice about Pienaar is how much quickly he passes the ball than the vast majority of our team. He pings them into feet. Osman doesn't quite have that, but he's willing to take that extra touch, has quick feet and a good short passing game.

A positive manager would use Pienaar where he can damage the opposition much more. He uses Pienaar out wide left because he likes his work ethic there covering when Baines bombs on. His international manager used him more wisely than Moyes.

It should have happened today mate when cahill went off. pienaar was our only creative outlet. to bring neville on wasn't just a disgrace but an embarresment for everton fc.

Agreed mate, a shocker of a move. If a second half was meant for two up front then it was this one. Wigan were there for the taking and we looked happy to settle for a point.

Moyes: "I'm disappointed with not winning but the pitch wasn't good. Thank goodness Victor stepped up"

Hmmmm

Got much worse when Neville came on with his pitching wedge. What a shocker by the gaffer..can't get my head around it!

You know - here's an interesting observation - Moyes doesn't really switch around our wingers does he? They don't switch a lot, and they don't move upfront or in the middle a lot (i.e. move positionally, not come into the center for the ball).

That's odd knowing that Pienaar and LD have the capability to play elsewhere.

But our CAMs get moved to the wing sometimes...

Huh.

rubbish. Howard is in the top 6 goalkeepers in the league. All keepers make mistakes and today was not a mistake. The conditions were awful today for him as well. I dont think we could afford anyone better than Howard because if we could you would be looking at keepers like joe hart, victor valdes etc. Howard is as good as we can get and I am happy with him between the sticks.
he isnt plain and simple ,not even in the top ten ,tell me ten prem teams that would swop there keeper for him ,overrated and if we had a decent keeper that was cool under pressure and could actually command the area , come out and claim a cross instead of panicking we would do a lot better, today all he had to do is step to one side and get his body behind the ball first rule of goalkeeping if you dont catch it get behind it, he was looking at the player coming in and didnt react when it went a diffrent way due to body shape, i have seen enough keepers over the years and seen them training loads of times over that time to tell you he is more brucie than southall, the fact that he is the best we can afford says more about the state of everton than the quality of howard

For me we have a perfect opportunity whilst Donovan is still here to play three up front. Fellaini, Pienaar, Cahill will smash the majority of midfields, then have Drenthe, Jelavic and Donovan up front. I honestly don't know why we reverted back to the system that we've seen score about three goals in 28 games against the worst team in the league.

Rodwell out wide right hasn't really been one of Moyes' succeses has it? :P

Fellaini's midfield partnerships have been pretty hit and miss since Arteta came back from the injury he suffered at Newcastle. When Arteta was out Fellaini hit a purple patch when he had either Osman or Pienaar partnering him in the middle of the park. Week in week out he dominated. The Fellaini/Rodwell pairing has never come close to it.

Moyes has the option to turn to Pienaar again I suppose but I suspect he brought him back to pacify Baines and shore up the left hand side. We need to see how Gibson pans out. Rodwell/Felli is not the magic bullet.

And that worked because Osman and Pienaar are creative link up players who can distribute well. Again, the problem has been creativity around him rather than the midfield itself. The reoccurring theme when Felli and Rodders played was always good possession but no cutting edge as we had no width and Cahill just in front of them.

Additionally, Fellaini has also played well with Neville or Heitinga just sitting behind him. He covers more ground than almost everyone in the team because he's up and down. That works better when he has a player sitting and covering him when he ventures. But it doesnt work so well when there's no creativity on the flanks or in front of him...which is why he's been hit and miss with Rodwell...Rodwell looking better of the two because of it.

Felli and Rodwell hardly ever lose the ball when in possession. The old "they just pass side ways" is true...but the difference now is that we have Drenthe, Donovan, and Pienaar out there so its no surprise Fellaini looks better because, even without Gibson IMO, he has better players around him who can pick him out or vice versa.

The Felli/Rodwell partnership will look twice as good with Donovan, Drenthe and Pienaar in the mix IMO because Rodwell offers more than just sitting like Gibson does (so far).

When Rodwell comes back, I'd much prefer Fellaini, Pienaar, Rodwell midifeld with Pienaar in the middle of the two. Cahill doesnt offer much, and Rodwell hasnt been let of the leash further forward.

It wont happen. But overall, I wouldnt say Gibson is doing anything special to boost Fellaini. I'd say its more the support on the wings giving the midfield more balance than just the 1 player. Bringing Rodwell in would boost the midfield even more.

Accurate observation there sir. But then again no-one comes close to the Big Man.

That's what it is mate, he has a completely unorthodox way of doing the basics that often gets him in trouble from a nothing situation.

Pienaar was outstanding he just makes us play it on the floor. Notice when he has the ball in some positions he will just play a simple short pass to someone where as other players (like all our team this season) would panic and go hoof ball it.

Pienaar looks (or at least in his first stay) a lot better for us than he ever has for South Africa, TBH.
