Windows 10

Worth a read. Reports of push installs of Windows 10 if you have auto updates checked.

http://www.infoworld.com/article/30...ded-users-to-windows-10-without-their-ok.html

I'm not going to read it because I'm lazy and about to go to bed but I'd be amazed if they pushed 10 to the masses without warning, never mind at all...if it broke a small business operation they could be on the hook for lost income. They're not going to bring that hassle on themselves, they're more than happy to let people break their own computer.

The Lumia runs Windows........it looks nothing like an iPhone, either physically of the software!

As this has digressed into a Mac vs Windows thread (yeah, thanks for that @McBain ) lets get it back on track.

For all my reservations with upgrading an existing Windows installation to 10, since I have done it with my laptop (which came with 8.1, but before I did anything I upgraded to 10) it has actually been fantastic! The minor annoyances of Windows Firewall turning itself back on only really give me problems when I am upgrading firmware and using FTP server software (the firewall blocks port 21 for those who don't know, is the port that FTP traffic uses).

I have had a couple of 'BSODs' but that was from running a very, very old flash tool that forces me to use a serial-to-usb adapter. Otherwise it has been rock solid for me. On the other side of the office however (the guy who updated his year old laptop) it has been nothing but trouble for him.

To reiterate my earlier stance, fresh install, go for it. Windows 10 is really, really great! If you are upgrading an older machine, I would stick with 7/8/8.1 for now.

You're right, it doesn't. It's polycarbonate, cyan, and runs Windows 10.

(See @McBain and I weren't that far off topic)

Yeah, I run my machines hard and I haven't had any issues. Virtual machines, web development environments, Creative Suite, digital audio workstations, never had any issues.

And if you're on a computer with a small hard drive, 10 takes up WAAAAY less disk space than 8.1, and less than 7 too I believe.

I've heard about this too. Hard to confirm since it came and went pretty quickly after some rumblings from the ninja cat brigade, but one of the reporters they cite in that article is one of the best Microsoft tech reporters in the business. @mezzrow

(Ninja cat brigade being Windows devs/IT guys, based off of this that was circulating before //build last year)

Happened to me today.

Went to make a cup of tea, Windows 10 was installing itself when I came back. I don't have auto-update on.

You must have stayed long enough to see the cute/money matrix. Hope you're in the fun zone.

Oh yeah, I've done well enough in my day, but they never seem to stick around.

Partially probably because if I was on the female scale I'd be in the danger zone, but, hey, what can you do.

Son of a bitch. This is troubling.

I'll just wait on my guinea pig @The Equaliser's extensive review and let you know when I go for it ;)

It was a bit slow booting up the first few times after the install as it was doing updates, but now it is running as smoothly as a baby's bottom. The MS Edge browser makes a change as well and the features are generally pretty good. I've had no issue with it reacting to my internet security either where there is always potential for trouble. During the installation I unchecked most of the options which gives it permission to reorganise your files so all good there. I still haven't had a chance to fully check out all of the new stuff yet, but in general I would say that it retains most of the essence of Windows 7 and is not vastly different, just more app-based which would suit a mobile or laptop.

That is as extensive as you are getting, so make your mind up and don't blame me if you don't like it. ;)

PS If I am not on here for more than a few days you will know what has happened. :(

There was an article about it in today's Guardian. Has happened to loads of people.

I called Microsoft because I was bloody fuming, but they said if I don't get on with it they can revert my laptop to Windows 7 for me. It seems OK so far, but I've not really tried to do anything with it yet.

Remind me again did you do a complete install or update only?
