Women's Euro 2022

If anything out these euros, we get more publicity from within the UK. It seems to be young families which are more the avid supporter of woman's football. Granted I'm only in my early 40s but it feels alien in the sense me swigging a beer and having a pie in a stadium watching it. That's my association to the sport on the whole, mates comrades etc..

I'm not being sexiest or anything like that BTW maybe the younger generation will adopt to it a fair bit quicker.

That said tonight by my own admission or the 2nd half more specifically has changed my view and fair play to them I did enjoy it.

As per my previous post I have started to look more into our womans team and do follow on all my social media streams.
No I don't think you are being sexist at all there, you are right by and large. The English women's crowds definitely have a higher pitch to them!

Weirdly that's not really the case in France (and Germany and Spain to a lesser extent) where their fans tend to be a small but dedicated team of ultras with flares and stuff going off.

I have been a big proponent of women's football for about 20 years now, (my avatar is a female footballer...) it has come on leaps and bounds but it was boss coming home a week or two ago and seeing a gang of girls having a kick about on the park. Not a team or anything which you see more and more of these days, but just some girls from school deciding to emulate the Euro team. That's the most important thing really.

I actually actively decided not to follow Everton women purely because I was sick of the men letting me down so I didn't want to double my pain! I look out for their results and all that but I chose to follow players instead which is good as it gave me a decent knowledge of a bunch of leagues and teams.

Intersting that. Is there injuries they dont suffer as much from? I could imagine so.
Hmmm could be. I cant seem to remember as many hamstring injuries for example. That said women don't tend to miss many games at all. I have watched PSG for the past 3 years and you could practically guess their team every week barring an ACL injury or maybe a concussion here and there.

Genuine question: what level of football in the men's game could these elite women's player play at? Divison 2 or 3? Not higher I dont think.
Honest answer...They mostly couldn't compete at a professional level. When the best women's sides in the worlds play against U15 and U16 boys clubs teams, they get smashed. US women lost to Dallas U15s 5-2. Australia women's side lost to a U15 or 16 local club side 7-0 or something ridiculous. People will point to those and say it's a scrimmage, and sure that's true to a point. However, they are still the same players and they were still beaten terribly by children.

All that to say, these matches are still entertaining. The drama, the skill, the effort all still make it a good watch. It's just apples and oranges.

That's true enough. I think a lot of the specatcle of the women's elite game is the lack of cynicism you find in men's football. The gamesmanship is not there in the volume it is in men's football. That's a huge draw for people who are jaded with the play acting and cheating that goes on in the top men's leagues.

I was slightly sad to see the familiar triangles during the first half. Back, across, forwards.........now where did they learn that?
Why should the women play any different I suppose?

It's a possession based game TBH. Not basketball is it. I thought the 2nd half was a massive improvement overall. Looking and picking out those passes. That 1st goal was critical for either side. Sweden in the 1st 20 or so minutes looked like they'd run away with it.

They are very white. Off the top of my head I think Nikita Parris is the only black player in the squad.

I think that's purely just how it is though. England have had plenty of black players in the past, even had a black manager. No idea why so few black (or other background) players are coming through in the current crop but these are pretty much the 23 best English players currently regardless.

I think part of it is that most of the academies are in the middle of nowhere and Women's teams don't have the money to relocate people like the men's teams do, so if you live in the inner-city and don't have a lot of money then you probably can't afford to travel in order to train, which limits who can come through

I think what the women's game needs, certainly at club level, are a few Maradonnas or Gazzas - players who are charismatic and a bit naughty, but brilliant to watch.
They all seem a bit uniform with the ponytails etc.
I can't tell them apart.

A part of this, I suspect, is also down to the priority given by the clubs to the development of players during their youth, where there's a significant imbalance.

In my son's team, there are three stand-out players: two boys and one girl. The boys have been signed up by Everton and Liverpool respectively.

Even at a tender age, the boys travel to the academy a minimum of once a week, and you can see the focus these players are receiving from the clubs.

In my humble opinion, the girl is the far better player in pretty much every area (she stands out in matches), but the focus of the clubs is not for young girls.

Physicality is obviously a factor we shouldn't ignore and where many men will have an advantage, however the development of natural ability is a part too.

These boys will likely be given years of support from the clubs, which will develop their game, whereas it's likely she'll receive much less in terms of coaching.

So when we're comparing these international players, we need to consider the ten to twenty years of unequal support and development.

If that imbalance is reduced, I think the standard of the women's game will naturally increase as it's already shown to do.
