I enjoy the relays, they bring a bit of excitement and are a tradition for ending the track part of the games.

The 400m Womens relay was brilliant and what a way for Bol to get some redemption after what happened to her earlier on in the games.

For me, I think the longer distances need to go. The steeplechase races are boring and take too long.
I said the other day that the 5k and 10k need to be outside the stadium like the marathon is.

Disagree on the 3,000 steeple chase though. That's about 2 miles and it's a spectacle with barriers and water jumps. Those athletes deserve maximum respect, IMO.

All told, the field sports should be getting much more coverage. They're brilliant.

Yeah, I agree on moving them outside the stadium, keep the shorted stuff inside. I find the steeplechase boring, myself. Maybe if they were the only longer distance races it might make it a bit easier to watch.

I do like the majority of field events and the coverage last night was embarrassing, skipping to the high jump and not even knowing what jump it was, what height it was at and who had already cleared. You could tell it was an after-thought.

If they were outside on the road then records would be meaningless. I like the them in the stadium i have to say.

5k doesn't take long to run really. The 100m sprinters nearly take as long to get ready.

Yes, very disrespectful and it's no wonder these disciplines are struggling to keep audiences. You could actually see one of the Australian jumpers last night lining up behind a jumper taking their jump...even though they were eliminated!

Well if the do keep them in there there the hetas shouldn't be prime time late afternoon / evening slots. That should be for the final with the heats run mid-afternoon.

It'll be more to do with the system they have for bringing through athletes. I'm not entirely certain but I think (after obviously the East German programme bit the dust) that athletics would be sponsored largely by big corporations in Germany like Bayer, Adidas, Mercedes, VW etc...as football clubs are to a large degree.

Maybe there's a breakdown there.

It'll be systemic.

GB have done well because they switched to a Lottery funding system; the Yanks have always had that college route through to developing top athletes.
Without lottery funding we’d be a different level for sure. I went Cabo to playing £20 a week on the back of athletes comments re lottery funding.

The US system certainly seems the best, most stable. The Chinese had a go around their Olympics but have not progressed much since

Good to see a broad spread of medals i though
India dnd Pakistan in the javelin, India in the relay, Spain and Italy punching above their usual placing etc

He was. The little Tory troll.

Preferred Ovett myself.
Agree, at the time Ovett was the resl public personality and swagger on the track.

A shame he got overshadowed by Coe.. It would ve interesting to see what Ovett is doing now.

On another point.
Nb is that Beto, in theTitanic? Until he is photographed by Everton, wearing the Everton shirt, I'll be hoping it's still gonna happen.
UTFTs!

Some perspective and my m8s, lad was selected for the junior Olympics in Germany on his sport in June.

He had to fund it all himself via Family and whip rounds.
He came top in the GB squad in his field event.

More recently in Finland at a World Championship event , again self funding, and having to take buses or taxi, to the arena.

The yanks were feeding them out of pity. Its a different world.

Our lot have been pampered by the Lottery.
