I seem to remember some absolute dunce in the wall just walking away from that free kick too. God we’ve had some poor players
I was directly behind the goal in the park end. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, was screaming at him about that corner. That he was out of position. It was the second angriest I’d ever been at a football match in my life. Angriest was the Hutchison derby with graham poll.

man we’ve had some shockers.

All three of those were at the time rated among the best young keepers in the country. For all three to flop quite so badly is an amazing achievement. We had a habit of buying young keepers and kinda ruining them, and you could almost add John Ruddy to that list.
Absolutely correct @Bruce Wayne. I have a feeling, nothing more than that, that our goalkeeper coaches are not really up to the task. Shot stopping/reflexes are in every goalkeepers remit, but what isn't, is decision making and commanding your area and making decisions for your defenders by being their 'eyes'. I feel we have recruited some fringe international goalkeepers, and almost deserted them.

Richard Wright for me, most the other on that list were not really ‘No.1s’.

Still remember him rolling the ball into his own net against Fulham when we were going for Europe.
He rolled the ball in the net on more than one occasion.

Newcastle for example after Shearer's worldy he let bellemys shot in from a silly angle

I don't know what the problem was tbh. Obviously goalkeeper is challenging in that it's not a position where you can really give minutes to young players off the bench, so any game time tends to come on loan, and I'm a long way from convinced that the PL habit of chucking youngsters out on loan does the first bit of good in terms of preparing them for the first team. It's just quite stark that we signed a lot of keepers who were getting England honours at u19 and u21 level, and not a single one of them did anything for us.

Wright was rubbish for what we paid, but he wasn't that bad as a keeper. Gerrard was properly abysmal, basically his entire career other than with us was spent outside the top flight.

Tim Howard could have taken part in a love fest between himself, Freddie Mercury, Rock Hudson and Tom Hanks character off Philadelphia and he still wouldn’t catch anything
Im hurt but I still love you :( Im going eat a hamburger and hotdog now..

Did Simonsen ever play more than three or four games in a row? I don't recall him ever being considered first choice.

Anyway, I voted Wright because he's was full-blown slapstick, but Gerrard was equally terrible. That McAllister goal will never be topped, no matter how hard Pickford tries.

Martyn is the only genuinely good goalkeeper to have played here since Southall. He was excellent.
