Young EFC Players Out On Loan 16-17

...generally speaking, our players need to be impressing if they are likely to make the step up at Premier level. Even if a team is struggling, the character and ability of the loanee will be tested. If they are struggling for game time I fear it's a bad sign. In recent times I think only Liam Walsh has had a truly positive impact on loan.

i would add kenny to that

...possibly, but I don't think he had the impact of Walsh. Walsh won all the plaudits at Yeovil and was the star of that team, which he had to do be if he is to bridge the gap to top flight. Increasingly, though, I wonder if RK has his doubts about all of them.
RKs doubts are based on prejudice not evidence though. For the manager of a poor Everton side to bother to go to only one u23 game so far this season is at best surprising and at worst a dereliction of duty. Where he gets his view that the kids are not mentally ready heaven knows -- certainly not from Unsworth, Royle or anyone else involved with them.

...you would think he'd be a regular attendee at youth games at all levels. I can only think he's reliant on reports and training. From a reporting perspective we know Unsworth thinks 8 or 9 could step up so you have to think he's not listening to him.

Premier League
West Bromwich Albion - Brendan Galloway was unused sub in 3-1 home win against Watford

Championship
Wigan Athletic - Luke Garbutt played full match in 0-1 home loss to Derby County

OS Match Report
"The opportunity came courtesy of a corner on the left hand side, after good work by Luke Garbutt in his make-shift role of right back. The ball was met by a cluster of shirts, including Shaun McDonald and Craig Morgan, but nobody was able to get a clear shot away and Derby cleared."
"The chances started to flow, and Latics almost drew level in the most unlikely of circumstances on 63 minutes, when Garbutt’s cross from the right almost curled all the way into Carson’s net, only to drift just wide."
"The pressure continued to come, and Garbutt was unlucky to see his dangerous cross hacked off the line by Alex Pearce soon after, but that was unfortunately as close as Latics got, and Derby held firm to inflict defeat on Joyce’s men."

Twitter Stuff
13' #wafc 0-0 #dcfc Shot Latics. Garbutt cuts in and fires one in from edge of box. Yard over
63' #wafc 0-1 #dcfc CHANCE Latics, or was it? Garbutt floats one in, looks like it's going a mile wide but loops back and a foot wide

Fan comments

The two weak links today were Garbutt (did anyone see a forward pass from him?)...
Agree there Grip.....Garbutt was most def a weak link, poor passing especially that lazy pass back to Jussi,
To be fair to Garbutt, and Joyce there were a few injuries today such led to some being played out of position. Garbutt is left sided usually.
Garbutt is dreadful, I'm sorry
Garbutt was obviously makeshift right back due to injuries but he is nowhere near good enough.
Yes Garbutt wasn't great but in his defence he isn't a rightback, although hasn't looked great in his natural position either.

FA Cup 2nd Round
Cheltenham Town - Russell Griffiths played full match in 1-2 away defeat to non-league Sutton United

OS Match Report
"Deacon provided two moments of concern, first drawing a fine save by Russell Griffiths before thumping over a volley a moment later."
"This tie had looked set for a replay back at the LCI Rail Stadium as it headed into injury time but the Sutton United striker picked up the ball out on the right, jinked his way into a shooting position and beat Griffiths with a dramatic low finish."

Fan comments
Dickie and Griffiths are the only ones who have contributed positively. The other loan signings Whitehead, Suliman, Arthur and Smith have been extremely poor.

Twitter stuff
12'- #avfc 0 0 Latics - Booking for Luke Garbutt for foul on Amavi
16'- #avfc 0 0 Latics - Best moment yet, Jacobs earns corner, Garbutt swings it in, falls to Morgan at far post but can't get power on shot
46'#avfc 0 0 Latics SUBSTITUTION Jordi Gomez is on for Latics in place of Reece Burke. Garbutt back to right side of defence
85'- #avfc 0 0 Latics LET-OFF Garbutt gets talking to after foul on Kodijia, he's on a yellow remember

Fans too busy issuing online threats to one another to argue about Garbutt.

Division Two
Cheltenham Town - Russell Griffiths played full match in 1-3 home defeat to Exeter City

OS Match Report
"Exeter were on top at this point, and had it not been for a goal-saving tackle from Harry Pell when Watkins was bearing down on Russell Griffiths then they may well have gone ahead.
In fact it was Griffiths who had to stay alert when, just a minute later from the resulting corner, he palmed a deflected Lloyd James shot over the crossbar."
"That lead was extended even further five minutes later as Griffiths saved a Jake Taylor shot, but Wheeler was there again to finish from the edge of the six-yard box."

Twitter stuff
44: Griffiths pushes out a cross to Reid but then does well to get up and save the shot. Corner is eventually cleared
55: Off the line! Cranston does brilliantly to get back on the line after Wheeler's shot had beaten Griffiths.

Added: Brendan Galloway unused sub for WBA today.

Shani Tarashaj was not in matchday squad for Frankfurt's draw against Hoffenheim.

West Bromwich Albion - Brendan Galloway was unused sub in 0-2 home defeat against Manchester United

Division Two
Cheltenham Town - Russell Griffiths played full match in 2-1 away win over Morecambe

OS Match Report
"Rhys Turner was given the freedom to surge through the middle before releasing a shot from 18 yards, forcing Russell Griffiths into a diving save. Unfortunately for the Robins number one, he parried it into the path of Murphy who made no mistake from close range."

Griffiths has his own recent thread on a Cheltenham forum with the OP calling for him to be sent back to EFC. Similar comments by some posters in match thread. (He seemed to have been doing OK so far but tbf there hasn't been much detailed discussion coming out of Cheltenham.)

Bundesliga
Eintracht Frankfurt - Shani Tarashaj started on the bench and was brought on in 76th minute of 0-1 away defeat to Wolfsburg

Didn't seem to do anything according to live text of the match.

This season Russel Griffiths loan has been the most successful we've had, he's played in just about every game I think and getting great experience , I always look for their results when they play, hoping he keeps a clean sheet. He's certainly getting lots of shot stopping experience in such a poor side, but does seem to have a habit of dropping a save or pushing the ball out to an attacker who scores. He's 20 years old which is really young for a GK, if he can survive this season at Cheltenham and improve we'll have a good idea of how good he can be .... and he will have earned himself a future somewhere even if at League1/2 level.
