"Dowell is a 19 year old rookie. He has been sent here by Everton to develop. He is demonstrating all of the naivety of a 19 year old rookie, and he has not yet developed the strength and stamina that will come. As such, in what is a genuinely competitive division, he cannot do the full 90 minutes. And, despite his natural ability, he will make mistakes. What concerns me is that he came here all fresh and keen. He is beginning to look a bit jaded and dispirited. 19 year olds, unless they are totally exceptional, should not be playing every bloody game."
"Dowell seems to have lost something since the beginning of the season. I think we should be using him from the subs bench as he's comfortable in possession and holds the ball well."
"McKay and Dowell are both passengers for far too much of the game. They remind me of Lansbury at the minute in that they score a goal every now and then to keep the praise ticking over but lack the effort to really help the team overall for 90 minutes. You look at Derby and Vydra was flanked by Nugent and Russell who ran and chased everything, then you look at us and Murphy is the one chasing defenders whilst Dowell and McKay are walking around. If you want the ball, go and get it."
"Yet again, once Dowell went off we were finished as an attacking force."
"Don't know what Dowell does. I understand his role and what he's supposed to do, but what is he doing? He never retains the ball and isn't doing anything to create."
