Young EFC Players Out On Loan 17-18

Onyekuru probably won’t feature this weekend, he had a setback with his knee in training.

Must have recovered better than expected because he's on the bench today. Same for Teodorczyck, only back for 1 day after his brother died and he's playing.

It's against the Belgian LFC variety. Difference being that they also damage their own bus. They are ridiculous.

I saw an advert for England v Nigeria, early June, I wonder what the chances of Onyekuru getting into that squad , early days in his comeback of course.

I don't know tbh. Two of his competitors for the Nigeria squad also play in the Belgian competition. Simon and Kalu for AA Gent, same positions. Especially the second one is playing very well, same age also, I reckon he won't stay in Belgium for long. Loads of big clubs interested in him.

If he scores today (if he plays) that would strengthen his case off course... Very important game; win and within two points.

...Antonee Robinson currently playing in Bolton’s final game of the season, looking like they need a win to avoid relegation. 0-0 at half-time.
No Dowell in Forest’s squad, presumably injured. Connolly and Besic opposing each other in Ipswich v Middlesbrough, Pennington on at half time for Leeds. Season seems to have petered out a bit given the number of players we had in the Championship early season.

Championship
Bolton Wanderers - Antonee Robinson played full match and was booked in home win over Nottingham Forest

OS Match Report

"On the half hour mark the stadium erupted when the ball found the net, but Wilbraham was denied the opening goal by an offside decision after turning the ball in from close range when Kapino failed to keep hold of Antonee Robinson’s stinging drive."
"Morais attempted a cross from the left-hand side which was blocked but the ball was worked to Robinson who swung a cross to the far post where the 38-year old striker was there to head narrowly wide of the mark."

Twitter stuff
.@Antonee_Jedi threads the ball through to @velajosh25 in the area, who sidefoots a man but takes a touch too many and is dispossessed. (12)
.@velajosh25 flicks on @Antonee_Jedi's low cross at the near post, but the ball falls between Aaron Wilbraham and Sammy Ameobi as Forest manage to clear. (29)
It just won't happen for Aaron Wilbraham! The veteran sees his header cannon back off the post, before slotting home the rebound from @Antonee_Jedi's shot only to be deemed offside. (32)
Wanderers penalty appeals waved away as Tendayi Darikwa blocks @moraisfilipe20's with an arm before Aaron Wilbraham heads wide from @Antonee_Jedi's cross at the far post. (45)
.@Antonee_Jedi's cross deflects to @A1F1E9, but his chipped effort lands on the roof of the net. (75)
@Antonee_Jedi sends in a searching cross for Aaron Wilbraham at the far post but his header lands on the roof of the net. Keep pushing, Wanderers! Ten minutes to go. (80)

Ipswich Town - Callum Connolly started and was substituted in the 77th minute of a 2-2 home draw with Middlesbrough

OS Match Report
"Adam Webster had an anxious look when he deflected Downing’s cross just past the post, then from the corner Boro were even closer to an equaliser when Callum Connolly cleared off the line."
"Connolly did well to block Adama Traore’s strike after he threatened to put Boro level two minutes into the second-half, Bialkowski then grabbing Assombalonga’s flick as he diverted Downing’s shot goalwards from six yards."

Twitter Stuff
49' What a tremendous block from Callum Connolly to deny Traore after the Boro man had unleashed a rocket of a shot from just inside the box [1-0]

Leeds United - Matthew Pennington started on bench and came on at halftime in 2-0 home win over Queens Park Rangers

OS Match Report

Kieran Dowell, Harry Charsley and Brendan Galloway were not in matchday squads.

(Apologies for missing Lookman - was travelling yesterday!)

Barnsley and Ipswich fans think highly of Williams and Connolly, would be good to see them given a go around the first team squad next season, they will have the energy and the defensive side I think, but will need to see if their passing and technical side would be up to it.

This is what the Bolton News BWFC local paper said:

ANTONEE ROBINSON…7
Everton loanee showed again why he has been such a smash hit since arriving at the Macron. Heart on sleeve, he chase everything down the left touchline.

He seems to have done really well there.

....i’m as amazed now as I was at the start of the season that Robinson went on loan. Baines is fragile and injury prone, Galloway and Garbutt were out so it was a perfect opportunity to have this lad as back-up. Instead, there was this convoluted idea of buying a CB who could play LB. what transpired was us having to play a 2nd choice RB at LB. Had this lad stayed we would’ve had conventional LB cover and we’d have found out if he had a future at the top level.

Steve Walsh oversees these decisions.

With the end of the Championship it's virtually the end of the loans, so here is a quick rundown of the best and worst of most of the coverage - not necessarily my opinions but my view of the local fans' opinions:

Callum Connolly
At best - excelled in midfield and popped up with some very Coleman-esque goals
At worst - couldn't nail down a permanent spot as managers struggled. Often not used in his 'correct' position'.

Overall, imo, one of the most successful of the loans.

Kieran Dowell
At best - ran matches, scored spectacular goals and seemed a class or two better than players around him.
At worst - disappeared from sight as games passed him by. Played on the wing rather than in favoured central midfield.

Also a positive loan, but it remains for him to turn his undoubted potential at loan and first team level into a consistent choice on the team sheet.

Joe Williams
At best - was midfield destroyer and unexpectedly astute on ball.
At worst - was overrun in midfield and lost possession in crucial areas with misplaced passes. Injury cut loan short.

Proved his mettle at Championship level but needs to take yet another step to compete in central EFC midfield position crowded with experience and other rival young players.

Antonee Robinson
At best - was attacking force with dangerous crosses from left wing.
At worst - lacking defensive discipline and experience allowed opponents to take advantage. Played a lot as left wingback/left midfield as opposed to 'natural' left back position.

Good loan but mixed performances. Doubtful whether he can make an immediate impact on first team and another loan may beckon.

Matthew Pennington
At best - steady member of Championship defence with some vital interceptions
At worst - slow to turn and beaten by Championship level attackers

Although he is a personal favourite, difficult to see him in the first team unless as backup cover until alternatives come through. At 23, getting to age where he needs to make a decision as well.

Ademola Lookman
At best - matchwinning performances in competitive European league
At worst - ineffective and initially unable to impress manager

One for the future but will he be happy to stay or agitate for a move?

Tyias Browning
At best - steady performance in team in nightmare season
At worst - equally responsible for some shambolic defensive performances

Again, age may well factor into his future but seems to have not reached level expected of him by some at the club. Injury has not helped.

Loanees Brendan Galloway, Harry Charsley and Louis Gray hardly featured, probably for individual reasons.

It should be remembered that some youth players have had poor loans and turned those into international careers, whereas other star on loan and then end up as a squad player lower down the leagues.

I suspect we'll still find out.

..brilliant, thanks for the summary.

I found it interesting how the separate individuals coped. Not forgetting that for most it was their first taste of open-age football. Dowell surprisingly seemed to have an immediate impact, hitting the ground running which suggests he’s got the confidence and self-belief to back up the ability. His form, however, tailed off and we’re pretty much back where we were in knowing he can be a bit special but lacks consistency.

Joe Williams on the other hand started slowly then became a fixture. He never lacks competitiveness and attitude we did find out he can play at that level. Similarly Connolly has proved his worth and was particularly adept in playing as an effective midfielder. Every squad needs a player who can effectively fill a number of roles in the team and Connolly appears to be one of those. Successful loan period for both.

Robinson also grew into his loan period, we know he’s a fine athlete and it was a big plus he remained fit and healthy after suffering quite a few injuries coming through the ranks. It appears Pennington is well liked at Leeds although he has failed to be a regular. He’s academically very clever and that might actually help him forge a career in the game.

I suppose we’ll soon find out ‘what happens next’.

It's unlikely that Onyekuru will still play games this season for RSCA.

Coach of Anderlecht (https://www.nieuwsblad.be/cnt/dmf20180509_03505107): "We're evaluating their condition daily, but their injuries were severe and the recovery will take some time. We won't take any risks with regard to the WC. Playing games for Anderlecht may not be possible this season, full fitness for the WC should be possible." It's for the coaches of Senegal/Nigeria to decide if they want to select a player that hasn't played any games (for the last five months)
