Made Hoppin' John last night. Use to have it as a kid and loved it. Needless to say, mine was nothing like how I remember it.

Hoppin' John, also known as Carolina peas and rice, is a peas and rice dish served in the Southern United States. It is made with black-eyed peas and rice, Greens, Tabasco, parsley, chilli peppers, sauce chopped onion, and sliced bacon, seasoned with salt.

Were your memories better? or was your Hoppin' John an improved version of your remembrance? Because yours sound pretty delicious.

It was better when I was a kid. There are so many recipes for this dish out there and they are really different.
Not having meat in it doesnt help either.

Have you tried it?
Haha. Then you need to reach to whoever made it for you during your childhood and get their recipe ;)

I have definitely tried it. I live in Asheville North Carolina, so it is one of the dishes that my husband's southern family has cooked before.
