Six players in by early July and were still moaning about our ability to get a transfer done? Took United months to get Pogba, Arsenal weeks for Lacazette, the RS weeks for Salah and are still arsing around over Keita

Meanwhile we've had a demonstrable interest in Sigurdsson for about 3 days and he's sacked off Swansea's pre-season trip... give it some time
You know what we are all like.We could be top of the league and 5 points clear on New Years Eve.Then we don't buy anyone in the January transfer window.............IMAGINE THE FUME IN HERE lol lol lol

I dont think we need a back up plan in this case.

It seems as tho the player is interested in the move and it now seems as tho the selling club has indicated they wish to sell, granted very reluctantly, we are currently trying to get a price that avoids us lashing 50m on the table, 6 weeks of this window left, it if takes a bit longer and we can reduce the price by a few million theres no real issue IMO.

Is the saving of a couple of mil here, given the apparent overall cost, worth him missing preseason? If we really are absolutely set on getting him (I do think the amount is over the top), just get it done and have him settle into the squad - give him a decent amount of time to gel along with the rest of the newbies...

Exactly
He will end up here
It's going to happen
So if 4/5 m gets him 2 weeks earlier then just get it done

Honestly, this is how football dies. Everyone is on the assumption that the 'status quo' is going to be there for awhile. All it takes is a drop in subscriptions, this is all over in a heartbeat. And a LOT of clubs are going to go under because of such.

well thats a fun analysis. And what if he doesnt?
And it's not as if we'd make a profit unless we bought him, then qualified that season, then got to the knockouts. We may then earn about 40-60mill. (Plucked this figure out off my ass)

TV rights for live sports is a bubble that cannot just keep growing forever. Inflation is what it is but all these massive TV deals including the NBC deal for the rights in the states is what's driving these prices so insanely high. Can't speak to media in UK but over in the here ESPN has laid off hundreds of employees in the last year or so. Spending billions of live tv rights while more and more people ditching cable for streaming is pretty unsustainable.
