£40m Bid Made For Sigurdsson

Yeah. Let's never ever sell anyone ever again ever.

Unrealistic especially when you have moaners (however talented) like Lukaku. He'll do the same to Man U in a few seasons.

I don't see what's wrong with selling players who are deemed not to be good enough by the manager nor star players who think they are better than the club. Even club like Man Utd sold their best players.

I think our current transfer policy are going in two directions. The first is to buy youth hoping they will make it to the first team, if not we can sell them to make profits after a couple of years. On the other hand, we buy proven player like Siguardsson, albeit overpaying a bit, to bridge the gap between the top and 7th.

Yes there is: we were promised we'd keep our best players by showing some ambition.

Fell at the first fence.

His first season here after that statement and Stones, Lukaku and Barkley (no doubt) all leave to pay for his financial "backing" of the squad.

Same old same old: just another carpetbagger.

Davek in Mosh slamming shocker!

If I had a pound for every time you've posted pretty much this ^^ verbatim I'd be able to buy Sigurdsson myself.

Let us know when you've got something - anything - new to say...

I don't/won't deny for a moment that Lukaku was/is a very, good goalscorer, but Davek implied he and Ross were/are the best two footballers at the club. For me, as an all-round footballer Lukaku was lacking.

I do not doubt either that if Untied play to suit Lukaku, he'll bag goals a-plenty for them too... but I re-iterate, as a footballer, he was/is far from the complete article.
Oh I don't disagree in terms of his general play, but that doesn't prevent him being one of the best players. I don't expect centre halves to be able to go on slaloming runs and whip in perfect crosses, or keepers to have the first touch of an angel, but if they excel at what they need to be good at I'll class them as being good players. Lukaku falls into that category, he's not an all round brilliant player, but the fact he is genuinely outstanding in some aspects means he more than qualifies as being one of the best players we've had in my 25 years of watching, nevermind last season.

It's bull Lukaku moaned for a long time and wanted to go what can we do? Stones was not even the best defender let alone the best player. A defender can't defend and we got a great price at the time.

Look how many U23 players this club has signed over the summer. And Pickford, Keane, Sandro, Henry and Klaassen are all under 24. This club has invested in youth in view of making money in the future. What's wrong if we spend to sign 2 proven PL players in Siguardsson and Giroud to mix with the squad? They will give us much needed instant quality.

Again, i'm going to use @davek 's examples.

Moshiri said our top players would not be sold. They have been sold or are about to be sold (Barkley).
We don't know if signing top players last summer would have kept them because instead we bought Bolasie and Williams for 35mil wasted.
So, effectively we have done nothing to persuade these players to stay.

I

As for me, I happen to like Sigurdsson and think the fee is due to Swansea risking relegation and also the current market going mental.

However, if we sign Sigurdsson and then don't get in a top centre back then....what is the point?
Also what is the point in signing Giroud but not a top centre back?

We would be spending 80mil on two players who in a season will be 29 and 32. Meanwhile we have a couple of glaring problems in defence with Williams and Baines so we wont be getting top 4 anyway and will be 80mil down.

Doing 50mil on Sigurdsson when we have wasted 23-28mil on Bolasie and already have 10 attacking players is only going to be topped by spending 30mil on another ageing forward.

If we sold perhaps 5 or 6 attacking players then ok...it makes sense...otherwise why end up with 12 attackers ??? Its madness.

Meanwhile we have Jags and Williams at left centre back with Baines and Connolly at left back and Cuco the clown wearing a shirt

Please don't get me wrong, I loved watching him score goals for us - who wouldn't ??
And I have no doubt he'll bag a load for Untied.
But as a footballer, he's not the same level as say Ibrahimovic and probably Harry Kane to name but two.
Ibra oozes class and utter confidence in himself; Kane works harder and, for me, contributes more to the team ethic.

I see a lot of "he's a better footballer" thrown around to bandage our Lukaku sized wound, but Im not sure anyone is buying it.
He clearly is a better all round player, well he was. If he can still do it remains to be seen but Lukaku is clearly a better finisher and we will regret him leaving but he wanted to go so nothing we could do really.

Classic 'Walsh pincer' method.

I think this is absolutely right. Our signings are a mixture of PL experience or talented youth or both. Wise approach I think. Building the strong U23s will put competition there and force the best to the surface and in turn out pressure on the 1st team. For those that don't make it, we sell at profit.

Good footballing and business model.

Anyone thinking we upgraded by getting Rooney for Lukaku are living in a fantasy world.
completely agree - Wayne is neither an upgrade or a replacement for Rom. Rooney at this stage in his career is never EVER going to score the number of goals Lukaku will get in a season. That said Rooney already appears to bettter at build up and bringing others into play which was never Rom's strong point. Lukaku is an arrow head to the attack which is why he scores goals what ever level he plays at. What we need to do now is get another CF in who can make the most of the chances Rooney will create
