£40m Bid Made For Sigurdsson

Please don't get me wrong, I loved watching him score goals for us - who wouldn't ??
And I have no doubt he'll bag a load for Untied.
But as a footballer, he's not the same level as say Ibrahimovic and probably Harry Kane to name but two.
Ibra oozes class and utter confidence in himself; Kane works harder and, for me, contributes more to the team ethic.
Absolutely, I agree with your overall opinion of Lukaku, but as neither Kane or Ibrahimovic played for us last season it isn't really relevant to the point being made.

He isn't the most rounded player you'll ever see, but he was probably the only player in our squad last season who would get into the starting XI of a number of the teams above us, and has just been bought for a British record transfer fee, so to say he wasn't even one of our best players is stretching it to the absolute limits in my opinion.

Anyway, the rumoured fee for Sigurdsson is way too much as far as I'm concerned, and I would swerve it faster than Darron Gibson after a row with the mrs.

Stop talking about Rom the Manc.

Get gabbing about the legend that is Siggy.

Gotta love blues fans. Moaning never stops even when we start buying better players than we have. If we win the Derby 4-0 people will moan it should have been 5-0. If we do the double they will want the treble,

Be happy. We are boss with Mosh.

You make some good points Zat and I'm not saying Dave is ENTIRELY wrong.

But what I am saying is he's not putting any context to it.

If we bring in £150m from players who didn't want to be here/aren't good enough, why should we have to spend at least £200m?

If we improve the squad for £180m, what does it matter?

It's still a huge amount of money.

You mention bargains - like Sandro and possibly Henri.

Dave also conveniently discounts that we spent £34m in January, without bringing in a single penny.

And Zat, it's not illogical. We need proven players. Giroud could *guarantee* us 15 goals next year. 15 goals that could be the difference between a battle for 7th or a battle for 4th. Same with Gylfi and his assists.

This time next year is when I hope we'd be in a position to spend £80-100m on three *star* players.

At the start of the window all this talk of big money etc I expected 100mil spent to get us into a top 4 ish squad. So far it looks like pretty much sell to buy which will not cover the whole squad transformation I had personally expected.

As for @davek I think he made the following points

1 -- He likes Sigurdsson but if its sell to buy why not spend the money on a superstar defender
2 -- We have a lot (10+) attacking players and yet we have jags/Williams competing at centre back and Baines at left back
3 -- Moshiri has said we wouldn't sell our top players.....but he has
4 -- Moshiri hasn't spent big money at all like some are claiming....
5 -- Weve sold Lukaku and others and yet overpaid for players which is not good when selling to buy
6 -- Weve bought and are continuing to bid for premier league players at big prices. Why not other top Europeans for big money...

I cant argue with any of his points....you can discuss them and make counter points about players wanting to leave or us selling attackers after signing Sigurdsson but no one can say he is wrong...

As for signing Giroud and Sigurdsson, we will never get 4th when we have a mess of our defence. Its a total shambles. Were dropping 80mil in transfer fees on two players in attacking slots, then will probably sell some of the other 10 we have whilst neglecting the defence.

If we spent on these two attackers and don't sort the defence, its just wasting another season.

Bingo.

He's already sent a load of academy defenders out on loan, so we're lacking especially at LB

Again, i'm going to use @davek 's examples.

Moshiri said our top players would not be sold. They have been sold or are about to be sold (Barkley).
We don't know if signing top players last summer would have kept them because instead we bought Bolasie and Williams for 35mil wasted.
So, effectively we have done nothing to persuade these players to stay.

I

As for me, I happen to like Sigurdsson and think the fee is due to Swansea risking relegation and also the current market going mental.

However, if we sign Sigurdsson and then don't get in a top centre back then....what is the point?
Also what is the point in signing Giroud but not a top centre back?

We would be spending 80mil on two players who in a season will be 29 and 32. Meanwhile we have a couple of glaring problems in defence with Williams and Baines so we wont be getting top 4 anyway and will be 80mil down.

Doing 50mil on Sigurdsson when we have wasted 23-28mil on Bolasie and already have 10 attacking players is only going to be topped by spending 30mil on another ageing forward.

If we sold perhaps 5 or 6 attacking players then ok...it makes sense...otherwise why end up with 12 attackers ??? Its madness.

Meanwhile we have Jags and Williams at left centre back with Baines and Connolly at left back and Cuco the clown wearing a shirt

1. I have asserted that this point time after time. If the so-called best players moaned everytime when they were away from the club, agitating a move away what can you do? Keep them or sell them to reinvest the squad?

2. We don't know if we would sign another CB before 31st Aug. I expect one who will replace Funes Mori's role at the club in long terms. Not a top one like Van Dijk or Koulibaly though.

3. We have Rooney and Sandro so getting a target man like Giroud is a must. We need different type of striker in different set of tactic.

4. I have said this again. Signing proven PL players in Siguardsson and Giroud with big sum is to add instant quality to the team so that we have a richer chance to bridge the gap between the top 4 and 7th. This resale value...making profits thing is not an issue since we got loads of youth players and younger senior players and they would be sold for profits. As I have asserted that most of our major signings this summer are under the age of 24 not to mention that we have added a lot for the U23 squad.

5. There are still quite a few deadwoods who will be sold to recoup some fees back. What's the worry? When Jags and Barry leave, I expect Holgate and Davies to step up and replace them.

6. In frank, we had a clown in charge for 3 years prior to the appointment of Koeman so I am happy with the current setup because Everton are going in the right direction. For me anyway.

we haven't won a derby in 7 years

In reply to those who are saying, we sold or are selling our better players. If a player is unhappy there is almost zero chance of them being kept nowadays. Contracts mean nothing, ask Man United, Ronaldo, Liverpool, Suarez.
We have already replaced Stones, a poor defender in my eyes with a better one in Keane. If Barkley goes and I don't want him to, we are going to replace him with Sigurdsson, a more complete finished product, who will work harder and score, create more goals for the team.
Lukaku will be a more difficult player to replace because of his goals, for a team of our stature at this present time. But let's not forget apart from his goals, his overall contribution left a lot to be desired. We have brought in Rooney and Sandro, both better footballers and I am sure another proven number nine is on the agenda.

In Lukaku, we sold a good goalscorer, not one of our best players....
