£40m Bid Made For Sigurdsson

It's crazy money for Sigurdsson though - I've never personally seen a game he's played in and even taken notice of him unless it was a dead ball scenario.

9 of his 10 assists in 2014/15 were in open play. 5 of his 7 goals were in open play too.

If you've watched Sigurdsson at all prior to last season, you would know that he hasn't always been regarded as a set piece specialist. In fact it was considered one of his weaknesses until Llorente signed in 16/17.

I highly rate Williams, but didn't watch too much of him last season. Is he really worse than any of those CB's I compared him with in those teams?

Liverpool & City are known for playing liability in defense for many years. I cannot imagine Jagielka performing any worse than what I've seen from the likes of Demichelis, Skrtel Lovren.

As you do.

Yes he is, easily worse. You think Williams is better than Koscielny, Kompany, Cahill, Lindelof or even Matip or Mustafi?

On second thoughts looking at that, I'm convinced you must have been cryogenically frozen for the past year.

Koeman is here for 3 years (hopefully longer) - he is buying players to bridge the gap. proven premier league quality. sigurdsson has consistently scored and set up goals for a poor team. He wants this player we need to get him. people saying about resale value. i dont want us to sign players to move them on. if we want to sign players for re sale value we have lookman ... ramirez etc... We should pay what ever we can to make statements and improve our team. He definitely will. Get this tied up and sign a striker and a left sided cb. This summer has been great then.
I think you're misunderstanding the relevance of resale value. It's not a case of wanting to sell them on for a profit, simply wanting them to hold their value. A bit like buying a house or a car.

If players like Sigurdsson are bridging the gap - and the strategy works - then in 3 years time we're unlikely to still want him and so will look to offload him in order to bring in better players. If his resale value is low, and his wage is high, it will be very difficult to do that. You either end up keeping an unwanted player on huge wages because nobody else will pay them what you are, or selling for peanuts while still trying to spend big on incoming transfers. It's not a great long term strategy if you do it too often (I'm not saying we are by the way).

If we want the player then negotiate and pay the price
To walk away and hope to get him on the cheap on the last day of the window is what the RS have done with VVD and what Spurs are hoping to do with Barkley
We are better than that and don't want to go down that road and put clubs off dealing with us

You think £45 mil is getting someone on the cheap?

So far, we have done things correctly by submitting a bid. They said no. So we say, fine, we'll talk again later. What's so wrong with that...???

Just don't argue for argument's sake...

No honestly i appreciate what you are saying. We arent signing 6 of these players we have only bought him and rooney. We need to buy some players who are ready now and proven. To do that you need to pay more especially nowadays. i understand your point but this is one of them signings that needs to be done.

Not sure about how Williams played last season, but he's always been very solid for Swansea and he would probably start for every team in the league besides Spurs and maybe United. Unless he is a shadow of himself, then I don't see the need to replace him when you have Jagielka/Holgate and even Funes Mori when he finally gets back as back ups. They would be starters for Liverpool, Arsenal and maybe even City.

None of those other 10 attacking players are on Sigurdsson's level. And clearly not many of the other Playmakers in the league are, considering he is tied 1st with the most goals and assists of any midfielder since 2014/15.

Keep in mind, I say tied with 1st because he has an assist against Arsenal that isn't officially registered for some odd reason.

It wasn't too long ago that Giroud was starting every game for Arsenal, so having him for £20-30 million is nothing to be ashamed of. Rather him than Rooney upfront.

And as far as Sigurdsson goes, you're not overpaying for arguably the best Playmaker in the Premier League when his stats are better than players worth £60-80+ million.

You rarely see any of the other Playmakers in the league scoring goals or assisting like him with their strong foot compared to his ''weak'' foot. I don't know if Ozil has ever scored goals like that, or if he can cross the ball on his left like that.

Didn't Ozil get bought for £42.5 million or something? Wouldn't he be sold for £60-80 million even though he's the same age as Sigurdsson and has worse stats? I bet none of you would complain over paying £50 million for him.

I have been expecting you.

Slight correction Dave...

In Lukaku, we sold a good goalscorer, not one of our best players and we've replaced him with Rooney, a far better player who also scores goals.

As for Ross... I love the lad and have always wanted him to reach his full potential with Everton, but sadly and for whatever reason... and NO, this is not an invitation for you to get back on your 'Let's blame Koeman' hobbyhorse... Ross seems to keep coming up short.
Lukaku or Rooney?

Lukaku every time.

Rooney is not going to make up for the absence of Lukaku, either in terms of scoring or assists.

Mate we have just signed Henry Onyekuru who was apparently wanted by about 70 other clubs, as well as adding about 5 new players to the under 23's from various clubs around Europe.

Yep, sounds like its in a right old mess!

Facts are, no matter what they do, there will always be some internet know all who thinks they know better, when in truth, they really don't.

Yes its fine for us all to have an opinion otherwise there would be no point in the forum, but the way some go on about things here, it's a wonder they have not been head hunted by the major european clubs, such is their apparent in depth knowledge of all things football.

It amazes me when lads on here mention some 19 yr old from a second tier French club as the next big thing
How in the hell do people know these players
Have they no life outside the boxroom

seriously?! he'll be 30/31, top of his game

Hopefully that's the plan. I'm surprised we're not using the continent more (especially given Walsh and his reputation for this) for our purchases but there is still time.
i'd say ramirez and henry is walsh.

problem is koeman stated he wants proven players in the premier league. most of the young players probably also walsh. I'm sure if there is a young foreign player worth it walsh will sign him.
