£40m Bid Made For Sigurdsson

He is a better footballer that's why.

Maybe prior to 2014/15.

Defensively he offers more regarding tackles and distribution, but he cant win headers or aerial duels in the box like him. He's not fast enough to play on the wings anymore, he's not strong enough to play in midfield and he's not consistent enough at scoring goals up front.

So Lukaku is the better footballer, and as a United supporter I was very happy to see him finally gone. Although I do hope he will somehow regain his past form, because he could have a very good partnership with Siggy.

Yes he is, easily worse. You think Williams is better than Koscielny, Kompany, Cahill, Lindelof or even Matip or Mustafi?

On second thoughts looking at that, I'm convinced you must have been cryogenically frozen for the past year.

Out of those players? I'd prefer 2015/16 Williams over them any day of the week. The only 2 players possibly better than him are Kompany & Lindelof. Unless he is a shadow of his former self which you seem to be hinting towards.

9 of his 10 assists in 2014/15 were in open play. 5 of his 7 goals were in open play too.

If you've watched Sigurdsson at all prior to last season, you would know that he hasn't always been regarded as a set piece specialist. In fact it was considered one of his weaknesses until Llorente signed in 16/17.

Dispels the myth that his only assists are from free kicks. He's a class act.

You think £45 mil is getting someone on the cheap?

So far, we have done things correctly by submitting a bid. They said no. So we say, fine, we'll talk again later. What's so wrong with that...???

Just don't argue for argument's sake...

It's obvious RK wants the player
It's fairly obvious we are going to get him
Keep negotiations going and sign him
To walk away say no deal and then go back in on the last day is underhand and not the way proper clubs should do business

Red Echo reporting Sigurdsson due to return to training tomorrow. He's set to meet with Clement and discuss his future - they think the outcome of that meeting will speed up any negotiations with Swansea. I'm guessing if Sigurdsson says he wants to leave still after being granted time to clear his head, maybe even hands in a transfer request then they'll start talking to us and maybe be open to a slightly lower offer realising they can't keep hold of the player. They've probably been rejecting offers in the hope the player has had a change of heart not that, that means they won't seel but their position is strengthened by having a player not forcing a move.

Of course and I fully agree with that aspect.

But it's ok to be pleased with other aspects while we get there.
It's time to be failed to be impressed with anything other than silverware.

We've been doing the 'things are going ok' stuff for years. It gets you nowhere. The club owners and their helpers love all that. They get off the hook way too easily at this club. Our fanbase is way too sentimental and gush over anything that the club owners do.

We should be ruthless as fans:

Get a stadium build started in your first two years here or get lost
Get spending cash (not just recycling player sale cash) and have two massive net spend windows in your first two summers or get lost
Get us a trophy in that same time span or get lost

Hold their feet to the fire and never let up on them. If you dont do that and they'll take the piss as they always have done.

This feller in charge right now = just another in the long line of people like Kenwright, Gregg and Earl. I see no distinction essentially. He can prove me wrong anytime he wants like. But as things stand - three windows almost into his tenure I see nothing from him that persuades me he will.

Agree mate, and it's a little sickening, but he would never have come to Everton so we need to be realistic about our expectations. Unless we're prepared to pay top players £250k a week to entice them we're currently fishing in a different pond to the elite.

It's crazy money for Sigurdsson though - I've never personally seen a game he's played in and even taken notice of him unless it was a dead ball scenario. Happy to be wrong but it seems these are the prices we have to pay for the 'best of the rest'

Of course, he'd never have come here, but the general gist is if City can buy one of the best young wide playmakers in the world for the same price that we're willing to pay for Sigurdsson, then I find it really really hard to imagine we couldn't find any more interesting options for the money. It's possible that NONE of them would agree to come here, but it looks like we hardly tried based on the fact that we've been after Gylfi for ages. I dunno. If you gave your scouting team a remit to find the best playmakers in the world that would come to a Europa PL team, seemingly on the up, offering £150k a week wages, with a £45m budget, would you really be happy if Sigurdsson was the best they came up with? I truly hope it works out but it just really spins me out. Especially as younger star players are getting savvier about not going straight to a top CL club.

Finished that off for you

Ah, I didn't know that to be fair, BBC nor Guardian mentioned any addons. Still, rough point stands.

seriously?! he'll be 30/31, top of his game
I'm using the logic of the post I'm replying to, not judging him myself.

The point was that Sigurdsson was a 'bridging player' ie not good enough to take us to the level we really desire, but good enough to improve us at the moment. It's a fair point, and it's what City did with the likes of Lescott, Bellamy and Barry. In response I was saying that if that works, we'll have done what City did, and replaced those bridging players with top class players. If it doesn't work then he isn't a bridging player, and we're paying £50m for someone to take us from 7th to 6th.

Exactly what I said earlier in the thread, he will return to training for one last time & say goodbye to his team mates.

@SiggyTheBlue In the sense that Ozil is a dribbler, yes he might rely on pace a little bit more. He's a quality player though.

And the fact that he can dribble past others due to his superior pace means he relies on it.

I completely agree with you on Ozil being a quality player, but I think Gylfi is simply better. I would sacrifice a little pace for a better weak foot and everything else he has to offer over Ozil & every other Playmaker in the league.

Lukaku is a goal scorer, he is bad at everything else a footballer should be good at. Lazy, movement, ariel ability, touch, passing.

Granted a complete player doesn't need them all, but 2/3 would be nice.
