Who exactly have we not held on to?

Since Rooney the only one I've been that annoyed with was Arteta. The rest we either kept (Baines, Coleman) or made a bucket-load of cash when we sold over and above their price.

Even with Arteta I didn't feel that annoyed as the player was good for us and he wanted to play CL which I think we could all understand.

Players get traded. Unless you're Barca or Real if a bigger or more monied club comes in for your player it's hard to keep them and I think we do a pretty good job of trying.

This announcement is brilliant. It guarantees us a big fee if he goes, keeps him here another year at least and you never know we've got a lot of young players in and around 20-22. If they develop well and we make another couple of shroud signings then in a couple of years we could be challenging (or at least in the CL) and then we might be able to keep them for longer.

But it's one step at a time, Lukaku is the next.

You pose an interesting question. I've been on GOT for a couple months now and have only seen Davek post negatively. He doesn't respond to reasonable arguments for positivity, he just ignores and keeps on trucking. Strikes me a bit like Edison's war on alternating current. If you've got a dog in the fight it might not be possible to be an arbiter of truth.

I guess we shall soon find out on both fronts.

Exactly.

He'll no doubt have (or be having) the media training that the top stars get these days. He'll get used to it over time, just like the bumbling young Rooney did.

I'll start to worry when he stops speaking about us like this, and the kind of 'open book' character he seems to be, I can't see him screwing the club over and engineering a move. The only step up for him as an professional footballer and an Evertonian would be Barca or Real, and I don't think many would begrudge him a move to either of those clubs if it gave him the platform to prove himself as one of the best players in world football.

I wouldnt confuse "negative" with "consistent" mate. @davek has been consistent for years on these issues. But, IMO, that doesnt mean he only comes across as negative. In fact, if I could be bothered, I could dig up tons of stuff from him that will show that to be true. I dont know enough about the inner workings of the club to argue the toss, so I am happy to listen to all sides.

But his is a well researched point of view, and for that, I always respect what he says.

Are you seriously questioning whether some of the negative comments you associate Davek with, make him less of an Evertonian than the rest of us and he's moaning just for the sake of moaning ?

The only negative comments i see him make are aimed at the board. The same board that have pissed us about for donkeys years. That have taken the piss on numerous occasions. We are well within our rights to talk negatively about that. Some would say that reading between the lines, the negative comments you're referring too, are purely that he wants nothing but the greatest for his/our club.

So the fact you've only been on here for two months suggests you've not quite seen the other side to him. You're not reading between the lines.

I hear you, to be honest I don't really know that player they signed. I guess it's how it literally came out of the same breath of the anchor about the conference. That probably is why I'm really wound up. I know the cash they splashed a few years ago as we finished ahead so I shouldn't worry.

I'm sure someone has probably said this already but be arsed trawling through the garbage in this thread, but anyway...

Let's not forget Barkley is the best youngster to come through our ranks since Rooney and I'm sure everyone remembers what happened with him and I'm sure Martinez is also well aware. This, coupled with the constant "Barkley to Man City" speculation, I think Martinez has done this as a big 2 fingers to all the media who were touting this garbage and to show the country that this is a very different club to the one who sold Rooney. As a club, we're on our way back to where we once were.

I wasn't meaning to insult him, only to point out that I see a lot of reasonable responses to his posts that he doesn't engage. The pessimism about the board isn't unrealistic, but that doesn't mean there aren't reasons for optimism too. Fans can get jaded and biased, that's what I was getting at. Wasn't trying to get personal, if it came across that way I apologize to Davek.
