6 + 2 Point Deductions

Unfortunately, a large part of our problem is our huge wage bill compared to our income.
If a club's wage bill (compared to income) is much smaller, they can spend more in the transfer market without falling foul of P&S. Even though we've had three years of positive net spend, we've still made losses - which highlights the problem.

The report summed it up as us taking a gamble, and it not paying off. And now we must be punished*
That's the crux of it. Gamble and it pays off, then the higher prize money and potentially higher sponsor deals cancel out the extra you spend. Or play it safe, and never trouble the top teams ever again.

* the punishment of finishing ever lower in the table, having a managerial merry-go-round, not affording to buy players without struggling to shift out dead wood first, and our best players needing to be sold (Richy) seems like it has been punishment enough!

This is what is ultimately so infuriating. The regulations are there (apparently) to protect clubs from financial ruin and ending up in administration.

We have worked with the PL to avoid this exact problem through prudent transfer window expenditure (a policy that has already punished team performance already with our best players like James, Richarlison, Gordon, Digne leaving and cheaper worse players replacing them) resulting in two back to back relegation battles)

Just at the point when we are finally coming back into compliance we are punished with a sporting penalty (despite the ruling claiming no sporting advantage has been earned) and are now threatened with a relegation and lawsuit that could lead to our financial oblivion, the very thing the regulations are supposed to protect against.

If P&S didn’t exist we would have not sold our best players, bought more during the January transfer windows in seasons we were struggling, finished higher in the league, probably kept previous managers potentially even Ancelotti, not have incurred this points deduction, not have incurred the inherent fine of lost prize money for league places lost this season. We’d also have probably been bought out now by investors who knew they had a chance of competing rather than knowing they can’t spend a bean even if they want to.

In short the regulations have done entirely what the top teams wanted them to do which is destroy their competition. We’ve been first but watch what occurs if Newcastle Villa don’t make the CL and Forest Wolves don’t sell enough players.

People can bleat on on here about how Everton didn’t follow the rules but those rules were in place purely to prevent incursions into the elite of the game.

These rules, crippling injuries, the war in Ukraine, player x issue, have absolutely decimated the club before you even get into our board’s incompetence during the period. By some miracle we’ve actually survived and built a new stadium and just at the point when we’re scraping ourselves off the ropes and ready to potentially start think about moving upwards again the league have just come in and absolutely shattered us with a penalty that will certainly impact this season if not also next season if we get relegated and even if not certainly in terms of potential transfer targets view of us.

I just can’t believe people are being so blasé about it ‘maybe it will only be 6 points’ ‘we did break the rules etc.’ ‘we’ll stay up anyway’ ‘the club will bind together, can’t wait for Sunday’ ‘as long as City and Chelsea are punished’ - it’s one of the biggest most blatantly unfair disgraces in the history of professional football that we’ve received this punishment. In effect the PL with their P&S rules and the independent commission in how they’ve upheld them have taken it on themselves to try and destroy Everton football club, and other clubs similar, as competitive entities at the top of the game.

The club should be at war with the PL from this day forward and should have the defamation lawsuit ready to go for reputational and financial damages.

100% mate. Well put

That's all fair enough, but a kangaroo court that said there was a sporting advantage.

Enough now anyway, we agree that it is all bullshit.
It didn't though mate. In section 16 'Aggravating factors', 'Overspend despite repeated warnings' part 104 it says
We do not consider that the reasons for the PSR breach should aggravate that culpability unless they can be said to constitute exceptional conduct. For example, a deliberate cynical breach of the PSR to achieve a sporting advantage might increase culpability beyond that already arrived at by the extent of the breach. We do not think that this is such a case. Everton may have taken unwise risks, but it did so in the mistaken belief that it would achieve PSR compliance: it is not a case of a deliberate breach.

But yeah i agree with you it is all definitely bull. We were on a hiding to nothing from the start and would have been better off being unhelpful with them as we were always getting hit hard anyway as per the PL's instructions to them.

Everton undoubtedly took 'unwise' risks. The annoying part is that the Chairman, CEO and other board members, who were the ones responsible for taking those risks are no longer around to receive punishment.
Insted this is punish the fans.

How much money though for the stadium? People keep saying this and not backing it up with facts.
according to the Athletic, Everton argued 14.5mil on interest for stadium loans be offset which was denied.
That leaves 5mil
Loss on Gylfi is easily above that, but denied. Probably because we didn't sue him.
The facts are we cooperated, our transfer dealings the last few years prove that.
We shouldn't have cooperated, because the punishment for such a small overspend is ridiculously high, and would've been similar if we had told the PL figure it out themselves, then appealled on every detail brought up, like City have done and will do despite everybody knowing they have done far worse

Besides, there is an almost fully built stadium on the banks of the Mersey that wasn't won in a lucky bag. I'm sure you'll agree that contributed to our financial issues and is worth a lot more than 19.5mil
