Aiden McGeady

Both of these are 100% correct. If you look each of our players in turn and ask yourself "would another top six club be interested in this guy?" McGeady is one of the ones for whom the reply would be "No".

He's looking like a stopgap player we picked up for less than £2m, at a time when we had NO depth on the wings and desperately needed some: because that's exactly what he is. In over one thousand minutes spread across sixteen appearances this season he's registered one goal and four assists. That's nothing to shout about and given his age, he is not going to get any better.

Mirallas is 27, McGeady is 28 and Pienaar is 32: we need a new, young, starting XI-standard winger ASAP.
It is also an area we don't have many promising prospects in the academy - Kennedy and Henen perhaps although he might be more of a striker. Atsu was probably meant to provide that raw energy but it doesn't seem to have worled out for the lad to date.

Atsu is a mystery. He's had three starts and come on as a sub five times, for a grand total of 250 minutes... but this is over a stretch of time where both Mirallas and Pienaar have been out with injuries. Martinez must be seeing something that makes him think "Nope, this guy is gash." so why is he still with us?

To be fair to Atsu he, unlike Deulofeu, never had a preseason to get used to the team and to work on building his strength. Most players seem to feel this is a much more physical and intense league than those he has played in before and he is on the small side to start with. In his early matches Geri got tired very quickly, other than the cup competitions he didn't start a match until game 13 so in comparison to starts Atsu isn't that much different.

What is concerning is that Atsu isn't getting the impact sub appearances that Deulofeu did in the early season. Perhaps with our regular players not training as frequently as we have midweek games it is harder for him to build up a rapport with his teammates - or he could just be gash. Ghana has a tough group at ACON in January so he might not be gone long for that competition, so hopefully if he stays we will see more of him in the second half of the season.

It was a panic, perhaps Martinez suggested it as a bargaining tactic during the Lukaku negotiations? Martinez really doesn't rate him. He chose to bring on Pienaar (a slow winger, who had been out for a while), over Atsu against Hull. We really needed to pile on more pressure, not try to find that extra killer pass. It wouldn't surprise me if he goes back to Chelsea in January. Hell Martinez would rather Osman or Barkley to play out of position in RM over Atsu.

Aiden McGeady is a fine example of skills mean [Poor language removed] if you ain't got the brain.

Technically one of the best players to ever put on the royal blue, but mentally one of the worst.

Utter gash.
McGeady? Technically one of the best players ever to put on the royal blue shirt? Really?

Is this the same manager you think has given McGeady, who you also want shut of, too much game time?

Incredible. He's had no chance of showing what he can do, but he's judged already by you. 250 minutes eh? Nice going.

Try actually reading, rather than jumping to conclusions. I'm not saying I want Atsu gone: I'm commenting on Martinez's refusal to make use of him during a period where our two starting wingers have missed significant time through injury, and asking for what reason, if he is deemed by Martinez as not being good enough to play (which is the inference I draw from his being used so sparingly), is Atsu nevertheless being kept as part of the squad? I believe elsewhere in the thread someone ventured the opinion that perhaps taking Atsu on loan was a condition of the Lukaku signing - do you have any theories?

Dont forget Atsu...he was hopeless against Hull too.
It is odd, people are so quick to judge a player after minimal time. It isn't even the "my first impressions are.." assessment but an absolute "he's gash/great" with very little grey inbetween.

At least with Mcgeady it makes a bit of sense in that people will have watched him play for several years for Ireland. But few will have seen some of the youngsters like Atsu/Robles regualarly and kids are notoriously inconsistent anyway.

Players like Fellaini/Naismith/Coleman and in the reverse Jelavic have made me realise I'd make a terrible scout.

Please can we move McGeady on and send Atsu packing in January as both make me want to have sexy time with the wife just to avoid seeing them ruin our beloved jersey.
*Skin crawls on both counts*

Nah, the only way your post can be taken is that Martinez sees him in training, hasn't played him much so he mustn't be good enough. You had to have meant that because you followed it up with:

"we need a new, young, starting XI-standard winger ASAP."

Doesn't sound like someone who's not pre-judged him and found him wanting.

Even on McGeady: he's been here 11 months and played 20 odd games. It's amazing.
