Alan Partridge

As I sit on the bus into work i can reflect on it.

Of course I will watch again later. And again. And again!

But it was great. The evolution of not only the Partridge character, but also Lynn and Simon are evident again, and I can’t wait to see where they go now.

Of course you’ll get haters but that’s life. People have different tastes. It did start slow. So I wonder if people made their mind up and that was that.

Most fans wanted a return to the BBC which means some thing will feel familiar. This felt like a mix of KMKY and I’m AP. With elements of his other shows since. Perfection. But in a new way. It’s a new mellow Alan with glimpses of his old self.

They could have just rehashed everything. Same catchphrases, same locations. But they’ve taken a risk and people will need to take step back and understand it.

Not only that, the new characters were great too. The co-host was great. Her facial expressions were fantastic as she’s quite horrible.

It’s a story of a man trying to take his one last chance and all his closest allies trying to help him but it’s destined to fail.

Or is it?!
The Co host was like a mature Katy perry

We enjoyed it. It wasnt a classic Partridge show, but then there were plenty of lesser episodes in the previous incarnations.

I think the reviews that stated it's as good as 'I'm Alan Partridge' seem more than overstated based on the first episode (though I believe they were shown the first few at the preview screenings).

Like any other time that they've come up with a new format for the character, it takes a little while to become attuned to it. Having said that (to quote Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld) it had some brilliant moments, and I can definitely see the potential for it to be truly hilarious!

It's interesting seeing Alan nervous. He's terrified of screwing up his big chance and is trying too hard. I like that element.

Another fun element is Alan misjudging how to contribute to the breezy conversational style of magazine shows. There's some good stuff about a seal rescue programme. Plus I liked the sections where he is the roving reporter!

The end bit with a hacktivist is where I felt it struggled the most (particularly the bit in the lift).

Bit of a mess for me. Considering it was pitched as AP being a last minute replacement for a host took ill it was weird how much input he had - bringing in his unrehearsed radio sidekick who had never been on TV before to a primetime BBC1 show? This is AP being given an unlikely call back to the big time - not slowly spiralling down the drain to regional digital radio where he might still have some sway to influence the format.

Previous Partridge stuff has worked because it's put the character in an environment and made him adapt and react, often badly, to that situation. This seemed like they just wanted to write Partridge "bits" and changed the environment to suit. There's funny material but it was lazily shoehorned in and it was very noticeable to the detriment of the show.

Him getting a little stimulated by the handwashing bit was familiar. Has that, or very similar, been on a previous Partridge show or in one of the books?

I'm a big AP fan but this new show was a massive disappointment for me.
It quite simply wasn't funny in my opinion; a far cry from Coogan at his best but I'll watch it next week, in the hope it's better than the first show.
