2019/20 Alex Iwobi

Picking your wingers based on defense is a good way to ensure that you never win anything. All he has to be is adequate.

We dont play with a winger on the left. He also isnt a winger, doesnt have any pace or dribbling ability to beat anyone.

We dont use a 10.

So unless tactics change he hasnt got a position.

He cant defend so he cant even play wide left as things stand.

We don't play with a winger on the left? Then what do we do?

Food for thought on Iwobi
Lol, back to telling us how good Iwobi is? I thought you'd finished flogging that dead horse a few weeks ago. All the xG +xA nonsense equates to 1 league goal, zero assists. For £28m.

I do, I also know what a sigmoidal dose response is but neither of them result in Alex Iwobi scoring or creating goals, so who cares?
I mean the idea behind the expected whatever stats isn't that over a game or two or even ten they'll be entirely accurate. If it lasted for 25 we might have an issue. But Iwobi has played like 1000 minutes this year and half of those were under a pretty incompetent manager. I'd say give it a bit more time.

That said I do worry that his shooting technique means he will always struggle to finish at the rate he should.

Anyway did you actually read the article? Because the idea behind it was more that he's a very good passer, not necessarily a creator where he picks out the final ball, but a passer who moves the ball from places the aren't dangerous to places that are. This is where I've said he is valuable from the start as no one else in the team aside from Digne, occasionally Gomes and weirdly Sidibe can do that.

I understood your point. Mine is that in 118 PL appearances (which is a big enough sample within which to draw conclusions) he has scored 12 goals and created a further 16. The vast majority of those appearances were for a team set up to play attacking football. For a forward that is a poor return. We can argue whether his balls into the box are of value or not until the cows come home but if a winger or attacking midfielder or whatever you want to call him doesn't contribute to a team scoring more goals than when he's not in the team then what is the point of him?

Utter crap player and he's dead fat too. Compare guys his size with two years ago at Arsenal, he's kin massive, like Lukaku when he joined United. Shame we won't be able to get rid for years yet.

You're more or less right but I will say using appearances isn't a good measure when so many of them are from the bench. If you go by minutes he's played 7145 which is about 80 full 90 minute games worth. It isn't maybe good enough still, but 28 in 80 is a bit different than 28 in 118.

I agree with the last part, although I do think the key point here might be that finding Iwobi a spot that isn't a winger/attacking midfielder might be worthwhile. It isn't like we are overflowing with amazing midfield options but it goes without saying he can't play there in a 4-4-2.

Also with that last sentence, it is a bit interesting you would say that given your vehement defense of Bernard. Right now for me neither is good enough, but there are still things about Iwobi I like and could see working out. Given his age I'm not ready to give up on him but I can see why people are really dubious right now.

Yep.
He's shight...we got stitched up yet again
Its 6yrs(?) since we paid £28M for Lukaku and I though that was a fortune for us.
Then we (well over) paid £28 for Bolasie.
Then £28M for Iwobi.

I think deep down we haven't reset our 'internal value of money Re.footballers' meter. £28M is now a pittance.

Suck it up, own it, get over it, etc. - We got full value for our money.

Same with Kean...we might be able to shift Kean, or Ancelotti will work wonders with both of them.

Or pigs might fly.

I shake my head in desair about this 'king Club and the PL sometimes.

Nobody knows what the new post virus landscape will eventually look like. I just hope that all concerned...the whole Prem League... don't try to keep on with the old ways and that the possible transition off the ventilator of stupid money life support doesnt see the plug get pulled on us (the rs can totally implode though)

Off on a wish list now but I wish that the club would say to all those on the 60k 70k, 80k 100k, 120k (ffs.) Everybody has to take a 50% pay cut or koff - we can't pay it any more.
