2020/21 Alex Iwobi

I think the one issue that is not in dispute is that Iwobi is becoming a more peripheral figure in the squad as the season moves on. It is a pity because I thought he has the potential to be a good player but he seems to lack the desire or the self belief to make an impact on a regular basis.

The message he put up about wanting to play in his preferred position tells me that he believes he is not doing as well as he should because somebody else is not playing him where he feels he should be playing. The message is that it is somebody else is responsible for his poor form. The message may be directed at the international manager but the fact remains that at Everton he is also not being played in his preferred position and his form is poor. it isn't a huge stretch to think that he was sending a message to both club and country.

I don't think he would have started against Chelsea if Coleman, Doucoure and/or JR were fit. He was asked to do a particular job which was alien to him, but it would appear the manager felt he was not able to fill that role satisfactorily. Josh King has come into some games wide on the right, I think he is going to get a start shortly and if it is on the right and if he does well then Iwobi will be pushed further down the pecking order.

I just don't understand this. He's not a RB or really a right sided player period so because he's not able to do well there he doesn't have the desire to be good? And beyond that he's at fault for not doing the thing he can't do to a satisfactory level?

It's an extreme example but if we decided Mina was our best option at RW or RB and played him there all season would anyone feel like it was his fault or it was his lack of drive to succeed that caused him not to? Because I feel like that is where we are right now.

I know we aren't supposed to criticize Carlo, and I'm not even saying Iwobi would have worked out otherwise because I really don't know, but he saw him as a right sided player and tried to make him that. It is a failed experiment.

Is he? I'm mostly seeing him compared to Bily over the play him as a 10 shouts and Walcott because he is a useless winger we overpaid arsenal for.
I've seen Nyarko, gueye, bolasie, walcot, nkounko for some mad reason if your innocent, kone, Jay Jay Okocha, niasse. And thats just the last two games. Some of them multiple times. The less outrageous ones off course.

Yeah, silly us, why would we think he could play RW.

I cant be arsed checking, but I imagine Mina hasn't played many games at RW or RB.

Most of those appearances are with us haha.

There's a really easily identifiable technical reason for why he struggles out there. And honestly the solution is pretty easy, we've even done it a time or two, but it seems like it always goes back to hugging the touchline and that brings in the technical flaw in a major way.

And before you go "he's not good at football that's the flaw lolol" I'll tell you the problem is that he's one footed. He can't pass inside on his left foot so when he's on the touchline receiving the ball from the fullback there is nowhere for him to go under pressure. When he is further inside, even in a nominally right wing position, he's ok, but we've got him trying to do a Jesus Navas impression or something and that really isn't what he is.

So we can say it is position or role or whatever but the point is simply he's not being used in a way he can succeed and it isn't a lack of determination or desire or any of those things that is holding him back. It would take years of work for him to play this way at this level no matter how much he wants to. I mean I really want to dunk a basketball too but I'm not going to be able to walk out there and do it because I really want to, I'm maybe 6 foot and can't jump, so it is going to take years of specialized training to get there. That's Iwobi right now with playing the role Carlo is asking of him.
