We would have lost with 10 men too. Would have made no difference.

Gomes should do much better. He was disinterested and unprofessional.
Don't think he was disinterested. He's just god awful against any form of pressure.

Lampard had too much trust in him, it was a bad sub.

Allan is one of the best tacklers in the league. Gomes is one of the worst. You can't make that sub mate.

It’s a right Hobson’s choice though.

I am willing to bet that ge won’t make that mistake with Gomes again.
I just don't get the certainty that Allan was going to get sent off. He's been booked in loads of games for us and never got sent off. He wasn't playing well but we had a platform with him in midfield at least.

pretty much this, Allan might have been a red waiting to happen, but with the game finely balanced as it was at HT, a midfield two of gomes and VDB was only gonna end one way.

it was either keep allan on and hope he doesnt get another card or put another cb on and put holgate cm, under no circumstances should gomes be asked to play in a two wityh VDB.

Lampard will see performances like this and know it's not all rosey after leeds last week, i doubt gomes will play much again this season

A big mistake was signing Ali rather then getting in a proper CM

You can't ignore the point that the ref was going to send him off if he made even 1 more soft foul. You're acting like there was good options available to the manager. Allan had been careless and was about to get sent off. Gomes then played terribly and I think he was unprofessional. That knee in the back thing was totally ridiculous and it looked like he couldn't be arsed making a proper challenge.

He made a worse foul after the booking than the one he was booked for. The ref thought about sending him off. Of course it was likely to happen.
And then he didn't make another foul, made one successful tackle and got fouled himself twice.

It also was in no way a worse foul, Tim. Lampard got it badly wrong. Not because Allan was playing well, but because the alternative was Gomes.

I'm not acting like there were any good options. But you don't compound it.

If we had any other midfield option on the bench then it'd have been more understandable but the midfield was wide open as soon as he brought Gomes on, whereas at least with Allan it gave us a threat going the other way because they weren't able to press us into submission.

Gomes wasn't unprofessional, he's just crap. Really, really crap.

Well that was Lampard’s judgement call.

Allan committed a foul that could have been a second yellow shortly after his first yellow. I am sure that is what swayed Lampard’s judgement.

Yeah and that was a mistake that I'm gonna call out. I'm sure in hindsight he knows that too.

I actually think the biggest lesson will be a loss of trust in Gomes. I can see Gbamin or Onyango making the bench ahead of him.

He should also have learned that Gomes cannot play in a two man CM.

If he does stick with Gomes, it needs to be a midfield five. He could have done that yesterday by moving Richarlison to the left.

Finally, I am sure it will make him change the approach a bit for away games. More of an emphasis on stopping the opposition. The problem yesterday is that once Allan got a card, the midfield became ineffective. If we had moved to five in midfield, it may have been less risky and Allan could have stayed on.
