2023/24 Amadou Onana

It's going to be difficult for him as we don't get to cup quarter finals that often. You need real performers in the massive moments and he couldn't deliver. Playing ok in a league game won't make up for that unfortunately.
We’ve been to quarter finals in 4 of the last 5 seasons now but haven’t got past that stage, lost on pens to Leicester in 2019/20, lost in the last minute to United a season later and then lost 4-0 to Palace in the FA Cup the season after.

I love the way people talk about these "modern" pens. David Unsworth used to take pens like that. He strode up to the ball, waited for the keeper to commit and then rolled it in the other side. He was one of our most successful penalty takers. I remember the one time the goalie refused to dive, and on that occasion he leathered it and nearly broke the bar!!
And scored the rebound!

Was boss at pens was Unsworth.

I don't think it's fair to call him arrogant/cocky because he made a wrong choice in how to take a penalty.

Feels like the same overreactive kneejerk where DCL/Davies liking clothes is the reason they had a bad game/got injured. Unless he comes out in some delusional interview like Gordon did I don't think we can say he thinks he's above it all.

As long as we're in the market for young or flawed players, we can expect mistakes to happen.

I'm not saying he can't kick it hard enough, just that his accuracy is not good. If you can show me a few hard shots from the edge if the box or a bit further in from Onana since he arrived where the keeper has had to make a good save I'll gladly withdraw my remark

He's a professional footballer mate who has volunteered to take the 5th penalty ahead of his other professionals.

He can kick a ball from 12 yards with some accuracy.

Players who hold and wait for the keeper to move before putting it the other way elevate themselves above, believing they've got the technique/ability to take a better penalty. It also looks good on Instagram. He's not having to conjure up a different style out of necessity because he can't kick a ball with any accuracy from 12 yards out.

Dyche has already said mate ( I'm sure ) that he asked who wanted to take one
He said who didnt want to take one, and said all said they would take one, we have then said we looked at stats etc, and to me thats how they have been picked, stats wise taking pens in training. either way whatever way they were picked he should never be on one, and he shouldnt take another one if we end up in another shoot out

Well given our recent history that will be next year's League Cup.

I agree about the attitude, but as my lad pointed out that often masks insecurity.
That may be for us common pleb type.
However, dont think its a stretch to say, young professional modern footballer has the world at their whims surrounded by people who tell them they are greatest and its no surprise ego gets the better of many.

As I said last night, if he put it 30 yards over, or wide - that's life.

It's not his fault we've not won a trophy since before he was born - but that penalty style just sticks in the throat.

Whether its ego, arrogance or just his penalty 'style', I hope we never see it again. Whether in a game when we're 2-0 up, and especially not for a penalty to send us to a semi final.

Should never have been in the 5 anyway, a few of us give our players to take a pen before the shootout and I dont recall one saying him. I had Garner and Pickford ahead of him. Only Gana I'd have had taking a penalty after Onana.
It's not a style of penalty I like, too much room for error. Fulham had a few pens last night that Pickford got near to but the power on the shot was enough to score. With these short run up pens if the goalie goes the right way then its a save every single time.

That said I think people are acting like Onana's pen was some mad anomaly when in reality loads of players take pens like that in the modern game. As I said I don't like them but those people calling it arrogance or not being bothered etc are well off the mark, it's a valid penalty style that some players use.

Since Moyes left we've been plagued with billy big charlies.

Numerous managers thrown under the bus, Iwobi and his instagram, DCL/Davies with their side hustles, Rom spouting off to the media every international break, Schneiderlin, Williams and so on.

Dyche is slowly building a team who may be limited ability wise but work their socks off for the cause (Harrison, The Duke, Myko etc). We need less of Onana's showboating
and more dedication to the cause.

Big fan of his potential but wouldn't shed a tear if he's moved on in the summer after yesterday providing we reinvested the money correctly.

That was as big an opportunity to win a trophy since the defeat to Wigan. Phil Neville lost many a fans support that day and I fear the same for Amadou.

It was a penalty technique, have not seen him ever showboat unnecessarily during a match?

For me, on the pitch he seems a very basic player, meaning he does the simple things well, gets around the pitch. There is nothing flashy about his play.

….looking at the very basics, he’s not a footballer who kicks the ball well. His strengths lie in other parts of his game. What it means is you don’t give him set pieces to take, it’d also be a rarity for him to smash one in from 20 yards.

It’s not hindsight to say, he simply shouldn’t have taken that 5th penalty whether he volunteered or not. You sort it out in training, players like Onana and Gueye are down the pecking order, I’d actually have Pickford before Gueye.

it’s a big part of his game but on this occasion, ego got the better of Onana. He wanted to be Mbappe but he doesn’t have quality with a football at his feet. Coaches should ensure the best strikers of the ball take penalties in order. That largely happened until Onana leapfrogged Garner in the queue.

i just hope its a big lesson for him and he’s feeling as bad as us about it. Hopefully it makes him a better player.

You will have him them doing a strictly routine next time he scores.

Jesus, the guy who basically kick started Utd's winning mentality. We may as well pack up now if we don't want self confident footballers in our team. The point is he was a great penalty taker using this exact technique so the technique is not the issue, it was the execution. But that point seems to have sailed way over your head like a blasted penalty by Waddle. If he had back heeled it or tried to do a rabona you may have had a point because they are not common techniques

Whoah there cowboy. I simply stated that you cant argue against somebody's arrogance by using a comparison to one the most arrogant footballers in the game. Cantona was one of the best footballers that the EPL has seen, Onana has a long way to go to get there. All this despite the fact that Cantona only ever took one penalty remotely like Onanas. It was saved. The whole hop skip and jump that players do these days is an absolute mystery to me. Just hit the thing and strike it sweetly, sometimes they get saved, but at least strike the thing well.

In my opinion, purely on what I saw last night, Onana forgot the team and wanted to walk off with a swagger. That moment in time became all about him. Win something or prove something, then you can stroll about arrogantly. Interestingly enough, as we were talking at the game, we were saying that we hoped Onana wasn't on Pen 5, as he had watched the keeper go the same way almost every time and he thought it would be easy. I hope he doesn't make that mistake again and I suspect he wont. He may well take the same style penalty again, he may well miss again, whatever, but from what I saw, that moment, for him, was about him, not the team.

I'm over it now anyway, big game coming up at the weekend and I hope that Onana has a big part to play in it, as we know that he can.

All penalties are crucial, but 1st and 5th even more so. Why Onana they, was he killing it in penno practice?
No other reason to put him 5th.
Having been there and done that it looks like a last second change of mind where to put it.

The young lad made a mistake, albeit a major mistake. I hope Sean Dyche calls him to one side today and lets him know the extent of what he has done. I then hope he sends him back to training to get on with playing.
