He had a good game last night... I recon he performs about 3 out of 5 games for us.

Sadly if we have to sell the family silver to stay afloat/improve our attack, I do think he is the best valued asset we have that IMO is not impossible to replace. If Arsenal or an exotic European team came in with a horrifically large number (£70m+) I think we would ship him this window & loan someone to plug the gap or buy some kid with a high ceiling (not literally) who can step in.

The profit level needs to be considered also (I don't want to sell any of our key players but we all know that has to happen at some point). Onana cost a pretty penny and likely has a sell on clause.

As you say liasing with the scouting team should also be considered in terms of replacements

Lille have a 20% sell on clause in the contract

Brainthwaite is showing value, going to be more misses than hits shopping in the lower leagues for youngsters but there is still value there.
It's literally the odd player though. Championship has good players but most are becoming too expensive now for us imo.

Its does seem to be a premium market, one you have to gamble on before a player is developed to see any real value
Hit the nail on the head there mate. We will always go for the safe PL experience option rather than a younger talent who might be deemed a 'risk' The Brightons and Brentfords are prepared to take that risk, we won't and we suffer for it imo.

That strategy is a huge reason we found ourselves with abloated unbalanced squad, hopefully with the changes we are seeing in the recruitment team and structure we are moving to something more sustainable. That definately seems to be the vision, whether its achieved is of course another matter.

I don't think that's the case anymore.

Chermiti
Mykolenko
Patterson
Garner
Onana
McNeil

All brought in the past 4 windows, all 22 and under when acquired. Only McNeil with significant PL experience.

The squad was full of dross and we've been in relegation fights, so yes it can't be all young players. We also don't have Brighton's net spend to work with at the moment.

A young Tom Davies would gave been the difference between us winning and the draw last night. We can all but dream about what this side would gave been like with that maestro pulling the strings

Potentially in the past that was the case however both Benitez & Big Kev Thelwell have signed Chermiti, Garner, Onana, Beto'o, Myko and Patterson in recent seasons and we've also promoted Branthwaite. We would have also had Kudus but Utd went and chucked £90 millions on that carthorse from Ajax.

@Saint Domingo has done lengthy dissertations on this very forum in relation to the Evertonian myth around only signing Sgt Majors in their 30's from the Premiere League. His stuff is well worth a read on this topic.

You could argue in recent windows, but even then Chermiti isn't anything (Sporting are one of Europe's great talent factories, they don't let go of decent young players) Garner and Onana I can live with, Beto is a cart horse, Myko and Patterson are meh players although Mykolenko could make a steady squad player eventually. I think the right idea is there but need to see some more evidence. Don't forget in recent times we have also seen the likes of Young and Tarkowski come in and they are not young players also Harrison is 27 and there is plenty of evidence from the past that we have signed those types. Hopefully those days are gone.

We shouldn't be looking in this country, no value for money in the UK for a club like us, much better shopping abroad.

Almost all successful sides have a local core of players.

Also, weve done well within the age groups with DCL, Branthwaite, Stones and a little older in McNeil, Pickford and Garner.

If it was up to me I'd primarily be focused on English prospects and showing them the superior pathways we offer in comparison to those focused overseas.
