2023/24 Amadou Onana

Yes a few things in this.

1) Moshiri may be. I cant control that really so can only go on the basis of what is best in the hear and now.

2) Structurally most PL teams have too high a cost base. We are amongst the worst. A big problem for us has been sacking of managers. It probably adds 10% to our wage bill each season. We are still not ideal, we we are better if we kept a long term manager, and not ine of the worst offenders.

But no, it doesnt go away. Unless you do a Norwich/Huddersfield (or what I suspect Sheffield United/Luton are doing) and write the season off for the bigger picture.

The only way to balance that, is to sell players though, in reality. It's what most European teams do. Sell at hugely inflated PL prices to cover the wage bill.

So you're right it dowsnt go away, but the imperative to sell remains.

3) I'm not saying we take a low ball bid. I'm saying we take a panic buy type price.

4) He could be worth more in a year, or less. That's the risk we take. All we can ask, is are we being compensated for that upside. I think anything north of £70m is getting close to that. If we start going £80m that is especially so.

5) We are well placed in that area of the pitch. Iwobi can move inside. Garner can play. Doucoure can play deeper.

Sorry mate, i dont accept that take at all, i think its a bit dogmatic and doesnt take ointo account our individual dynamic and profile, i think as aa fan base we accept we have to sell our best players far to easily and their is no guarantee given the ownership dynamic that this money would be used to benefit the club.

Yes selling players at times in an imperative, not now though - we are cash flow positive at the moment. Next season we may not be - so we look at it then.

All to recently we have been forced into deals, we had to sell Richarilson to a deadline, we had to sell Gordon - and didn't have time or the profile to reinvest - buying clubs are dictating these deals. What im saying is we have to stop that, turn down bids and hang onto a player or else we will be seen as soft touch 0 which in my opinion we are. Also given the afore mentioned deals we have 0 evidence that any finance given will go to be reinvested - all our signings this summer bar Chemiti are on the never, never.

Given the ownership situation, with two weeks left in the window, the season under way and the contract situation of our other central midfielders i think we would need to be compensated in the region of £80-£100 mill for him and the inconvenience. I doubt we will get that, but thats fine to - he stays. They played stupid money for Anthony at this same time last year.

We are skint and that makes holding on to your best assets hard.

He's a very good player, a little inconsistent in terms of his impact over 90mins, but he's certainly not indispensable. He didn't carry the team last season, in fact far from it.

In our position you can sell your best asset (in terms of transfer value) and become a stronger team if that money is spent in the area it is most needed. Consequently I would only sell him if the money is right and also enough to buy us the quality striker we so desperately need.

To pin all of our hopes on DCL this season is madness as he is unlikely to play the majority of games this season so if selling Onana is the only way to finance such a transfer then so be it.

You're wilfully ignoring the context here, a young player in his debut season in the premier league, who played one half of the season under a tactically inept fraud and in a team of misfits, and the other half of the season with the spectre of relegation hanging over the team. To draw the conclusions you are making is bad critical thinking.

I agree on your first point, it is hard to hold on to your assets in the financial position we are in. But not impossible and, in this instance, I don't think we gain more than we lose by selling him this year and this late into the window, no matter what the price tag. But that's my opinion and you're entitled to disagree with me, as I do with you.

Yes we need a new striker, clear as day. How much realistically are we going to spend on a new striker though? If you think we are going to attract a £50m striker (a reinvestment of Onana money) then you are in dreamland. £30m possibly - but then will they proven? How long for them to bed in? And there are probably other assets we can sell to fund that £30m, not our best player.

We used to be unable to hold onto our top world class players. Now we don't really produce them any more we can't hold on to our decent players with potential.

So this what a gradual descent to the championship looks like.

Considering he was so poor last season, if you double or triple your investment on him in 12 months it's a win. If he plays as bad as last year nobody's paying anything for him. I'm not fussed whether he stays or goes, not seen enough of the good stuff to be emotionally attached.
It’s only a win if it is reinvested in the team in the positions we need at the quality we need. The lack of a recent net spend despite the sales, surely must indicate that not all (if a lot) of the money will be made available and also my confidence in us strengthening the team with quality is low. It is a massive and very real risk we face when we have an owner whose money pipeline has been closed off, who clearly wants out and/or wants the stadium funded anyway he can, and whilst the team was one goal away from relegation last year, and has just been beaten at home on the opening day of the season by Fulham, keep him, develop him and hopefully he is worth more this time next year.

After last Saturday outburst from him I think he wants out anyway and it will be sooner rather than later. I dont see him being here by the start of next season thats for sure .. time will tell!

It's not just the contributions, it's the quality of the contributions. Real zip on the passes, great vision

I genuinely think - and this isn't a criticism - that because he has a languid running style and his arms and legs don't move really quickly, that people think he isn't trying hard enough, or running fast enough, or he doesn't look like he is all action. I guess people say what they see, therefore, that he isn't doing enough.

Which is silly
TBH I was looking for more driving runs from him which he is very capable of. if he can combine these with his tackling and his new found range of passing we really would have a player.

Hate being 1 of those fans Dave, but I spent a lot of yesterdays game watching him and he simply doesnt attempt to get involved in the game enough, it passes him by for vast quantities of time.

He does some very good things, hence why even his biggest distractors are saying things like "Sell for 50m", nobody thinks hes a bad player.

I want to see him take the game by the scruff of the neck and dominate it, I think hes able.
Still a bit flattering to deceive - I hope he up's his game as we go through the season

Told fans to F off I think, presumably after some criticism. Will be happy for him to give a “shhhh” action to the fans if he scores next home game. But it’s a slippery slope with Goodison. Need to throw in some proper performances to get away with that sort of thing.
