2023/24 Amadou Onana

We sold Gordon and Kean (and more) for £70 mill in the last 8 months, we‘ve spent £12 million since then.

Makes no sense to me why people would be open to selling him, 0 guarantees any money would be reinvested into the squad.

I suppose people can see our financial issues with STCC would go away with another sale. And honestly, if someone makes a stupid bid, and a mistake, as a club we have to capitalise on that a bit.

I keep forgetting that some werent Evertonians in January.

It literally says in the links i posted + was all over the place in January when he came out and said he was happy and staying.

Like i said, my mistake, forgot some people werent supporters 7 months ago. When this was big news (to Evertonians)

That is not the same as turning them down. They just didn’t bid. Caicedo turned Liverpool down, they bid for him and it was accepted, then he said nah. That’s nothing like the Onana situation.

If Chelsea or Arsenal had a bid accepted for him in January he would have gone there.

Considering he was so poor last season, if you double or triple your investment on him in 12 months it's a win. If he plays as bad as last year nobody's paying anything for him. I'm not fussed whether he stays or goes, not seen enough of the good stuff to be emotionally attached.

We'd have to accept £60m if that offer came. He very well may end up value for money at that price some day but right now he's still a work in progress.

If we were allowed to reinvest that £60m into the playing squad we'd finish the window stronger than we are now, that's for sure.

….I think there’s ‘assets‘ and ‘sellable assets’.

A sellable asset is a player we can sell and not impact the effectiveness of the team too much. Indeed, we can improve the overall performance by efficiently investing monies from the sale. I suggest Anthony Gordon was a prime example of a sellable asset.

Onana is an asset. If we lose him, it will negatively impact the effectiveness of the team. It might even relegate us as I think he’s key to how Dyche wants to play. As you indicate, he only becomes a sellable asset if a club is prepared to pay ‘silly money’ for him. Indeed, I forecast he could be worth a lot more next summer when a number of the big clubs want him.

I wanted to sell Gordon I want to keep Onana.

Is right.

For the fee we could generate for Onana it’s one that needs to be done at the start of the window with clear planning in how we’d want to spend the money.

Everton with 80 million in their back pocket with a fortnight to spend some of it is a guaranteed disaster.

I get what you're saying, but he's not that good of a player to have an impact on our league status. He was useless last season and only contributed to our poor form, home and away. He looked lively at the weekend, but I'm not seeing him as a key player, he's more of a presence than anything else.

There's a difference between if being able to and being allowed to but not succeeding in. Would the full £60m be allowed? Would we be able to bring people in?

Would we get them at suitable prices? It's about trusting the team behind the scenes to do the required business in the required time, and suitably.

We made a lot of mistakes in the transfer market in the past but generally our business in the last couple of seasons has been good, with a couple of exceptions.
The signings of Onana, Garner,McNeill,Chermiti, Tarkowski have all been solid purchases. Maupay is really the only signing that has not worked out as we hoped.

If Utd are really interested in Onana then that discussion is already in play and Everton will already be looking at who they want to replace him with.

We do now seem to have a transfer strategy and our apparent dogged chase for Gnonto reflects that.

Thelwell signed Onana and if the sale happens then it looks as if he has doubled in value in twelve months, I don't see why Thelwell could not do the same again.

I'm struggling with what part a 21 year old in a crap team in the toughest league in the world having an average first season people aren't getting here.
He's our best central mid by a mile as it stands today, and he can have a huge impact for us this season.

Wages are our biggest issue. We can sell Onana and get 2-3 players in but we would end up paying 2-3 times the wages.

People who don't rate this geezer just don't know enough about football I'm afraid, that's the bottom line.

And I understand the argument - sell him for a good price and reinvest - but one needs to consider I) how much worse does the sale make the side in the short-to-medium term; II) how much time does the club have to reinvest the cash from the sale back into the market; and III) that this is Everton.

You cannot, therefore, in any sane world, want to sell this bloke. He is comfortably our best player and selling him would weaken the side in the immediate and short term, with no guarantee that we would replace his quality. We sell, we go down IMHO

I for one am also fed up of Everton selling their best players. I have seen no progression in the team under that policy and would rather we held onto as many of our best assets as we can, even if it was against their will. If we kept some of those assets A) we would be able to attract better players to sign to play alongside them; B) the football would be better to watch; C) we would be in a much more comfortable position in the league; and D) we would be a tougher team to negotiate with.

Say what you want about Levy at Spurs, but there is a reason why they attract and retain such quality.
