Not being funny but did you actually watch all these Belgium games? The games against Azerbaijan and Luxembourg?

And he didn’t dominate the midfield at Wembley - Mainoo was man of the match not just in my view but in the view of every match report/rating.

He was playing poorly for Everton and got dropped.

Undeniably, he looks a better player when afforded time and space (95% of international games are comfortably below Prem level btw) and when he has much better players around him.
I've seen quite a few and highlights from other ones.

Him looking better at international level have very little to do with time and space. It is all about playing for a team that wants to have some possession, plays front foot and offensive football. When you attack more freely and have 3 or 4 more players ahead of your number 6, you will automatically get more time and space.

In general fans have an unhealthy focus on individual errors and risk taking. Onana is a player that plays with more risk than old school managers such as Dyche likes (while successful managers loves it). And the issue with Onana taking risks and doing mistakes for Everton, is that it happens 20-30 meters closer to your own goal than when he plays for Belgium.

The Goodison crowd would have been moaning with Rodri on Everton's midfield. 100%

Onana doesn’t take anywhere near enough risks for me.

We wouldnt have moaned with Rodri in our midfield 100000%. Onana aint no Rodri.

You said hes had good games and been inconsistent. I said its rare ive seen a 7 from him. Inconsistent for me is good game bad game good game bad game. Not one really good game v Arsenal then bad game bad game bad game bad game good game bad game bad game bad game. Also sick of the same old excuses about him not suiting the system. What system does he need to at least look like hes arsed? Is that modern football now where players only try when everything is perfect?
This idea that 'he's not arsed' is a complete lie, doesn't get said when Garner puts in 5/10s most weeks

I think thats the exact opposite of what most people criticise Onana for.

Its not a lie at all. Nobody claims garner is worth 60/70 mil or that he has the superstar potential of Onana either. If he has the potential you and others claim then the only reason he doesnt show for us in more games is lack of application ie not being arsed. Idrissa Gueye showed him how to be a DM in this Everton side at the end of the season in the same system Onana apparently cant play in. Garners 5/10s probably come from the fact that hes not very good rather than lack of effort.

I just really don't get the lack of effort argument, I think it's disingenuous. I don't think he's a superstar, said myself he's inconsistent. 100% agree Gueye did show him how it's done, dyche was 100% right to drop him. Cashing in is the best thing we could do, he's really not liked and can understand some of the arguements as to why.

No, they are very different as players. But the "mistakes" and arrogance people like to criticize Onana for, are "flaws" Rodri's game is full of.

The difference is that when City play Haaland, Doku, Foden, De Bruyne, Silva and fuill backs more offensive than any Everton winger in front of Rodri, Rodri gets time and space. And when Rodri does a mistake with the ball, it's 30 or 40 meters further away from City's goal.

A Rodri sitting just in front of the CDs and spending 60 minutes a match in the defensive third, does too many mistakes with the ball for most peoples liking. Rodri wants the ball to his feet. Players that does that makes more mistakes with the ball than those that hides and force the goalkeeper to kick it long every time he has the ball.

Players doing too many mistakes and giving away the ball too often are hardly ever a problem. In good well-coached teams players are encouraged to play with more risk. To trust that the team is set up and organized good enough to make risktaking worthwhile. Taking more risks with the ball is a net plus.

Unfortunately both the press and most fans are always looking for a scapegoat. Someone to blame. Of course, errors and mistakes comes with a price. And it is easy for everyone to see. Easier to see the cost of having players that always play too safe and keep hiding from the ball while being lauded by the fans sub-par performances.

Look at Manchester City. They give away the ball all the time. Often in positions where making mistakes as an absolute no-go. But what they focus on and spend most of the time at training on, is to win the ball back. They run towards the ball when they give it away. Everton players run away from the ball.

Nobody is saying Onana makes loads of mistakes.
