Have you ever played football? FFS., people crying about this but celebrating this (yes I know it was that rat):

Gomes had just nearly taken Son's head off, of course he is going to react. As I said earlier., Gomes does it a lot.

Thought that was accidental by Gomes to be honest, Son was incensed because like most other things, Atkinson just missed it. I do think that was a mitigated foul from Son, he was still angry over the elbow, but like most others, he never meant to hurt him to that extent. Think his reaction was more guilt than anything else.

Son has to live with the consequences of his actions, he had zero intent to injure Gomes but had 100% intent to foul him - so there is no surprise that there is so much conflict of opinion with regards to this.

If there is any positive to come from this extremely bleak moment, it may make players more aware about deliberately fouling people in overly aggressive manners. Weirdly, one of the first things to come to mind after this incident was one Andre Gomes was involved in last season when he quite brutally and very deliberately stamped on the ankle of Alexander Mitrovic.

I have no doubt that Gomes was completely wound up by Mitrovic's antics during the game and it was sheer petulance that made him think "I'm going to leave one on this idiot", but he could have easily done more damage to Mitrovic than intended - which should maybe give the people on here who are giving Son both barrels a little reminder that the type of 'rush of blood' moments that Son did are not too far away from being committed by our own players, including the one who got so unfortunately injured on Sunday.

Son has to live with the guilt of what his actions have caused. I don't believe that the challenge in general was worthy of a red card, because it was more cynical than violent, but in isolation sometimes you just can't look past the outcome of a decision you make.

The wider media campaign placing Son as a victim is something I take issue with however - there is only one victim in this piece and absolutely nobody should lose sight of that. Sadly, it seems the non-Everton media fraternity already have...

Christ, some horrific posts in here.

If I could be bothered going to the vaults, I bet I’d find loads of posts from people decrying Son’s “snide” challenge, wishing our players were a bit more snide themselves.

YES, he absolutely wanted to trip him and defo should have got a yellow but he couldn’t have had any clue about how it was to end up. If every player thought through the consequences of every challenge - snide or not - they were about to make, to its worst conclusion there’d be no more tackling in the game.

Red card SHOULD be rescinded, because it was only given due to the outcome of the challenge and not the challenge itself.

I absolutely feel sorry for Son, because that and feeling sorry for Gomes are not mutually exclusive, believe it or not.

Go vaulting if you like, you'll find some of my posts calling for a bit more snide to our teams, but put it in context, there's the 'snide' we lack, kicking the ball away from free kicks, appealing for absolutely anythinh, pestering the ref at every opportunity, basically standing up for yourself...as opposed to 'suarez snide', like Son's 'long after the ball has gone' go at Gomes' ankle. He knew he was going to hurt him, maybe not the way it turned out, but it was spiteful and intended retribution.
This feeling sorry for Son has me baffled, he knew exactly what he was doing.

If you make deliberate fouls where you go after the man and not the ball and, the crucial point, also lunge in rather than staying on your feet, then you deserve to be sent off.

The ball is yards from the lunge. It was a nasty foul where he clearly went for the man. He's not a victim. He's made a bad decision that has caused a serious injury.

I'm not saying it's the worst challenge I've ever seen and he should be banned for weeks, because he shouldn't. But spurs need to stop wallowing in their own false state of victimhood and get off their high horse. Show some grace and sensitivity and accept the 3 game ban and move on. Their behaviour in this is not befitting of the good club that they undoubtedly are. The media are encouraging them too.

If our team had an ounce of bottle then the ref would have done him a favour sending him off.

I'd have expected someone to play the ball short and then go right through him so he got off lightly really.

Except our team were too busy wiping his tears and making sure he was ok to carry on.

Football really is dead.
