2021/22 Anthony Gordon

I’m really torn between whether what I see from Gordon (21) is genuine potential of something special or simply the rest of the team are so utterly rubbish they make him look better than he actually is.
I’ve long said his end product isn’t good enough and I stand by that, but seeing him against Gallagher (22) , Olise (20) and Eze (23) he really doesn’t stand out, and all three were better then him today at least.
His free kicks and corners are on the whole awful too.

He's a million miles away from them lads in terms of maturity to his game, but he has came on ten fold from last season so we need to hope he continues to improve.

The difference is that Gordon is a ball player playing in a team without ball players.

Olise, Eze, Zaha and Gallagher can all play off one another.

Who can Gordon bounce off?

Put Gordon into the Palace team over a few months and he'd be seen as top quality imo.

Yes and no.
The industry is there, as it is with all them 4 Palace players, but the decision making and distribution is still a long way off them.
Imo though it will come, but to your point he would definitely progress faster in a team like Palace.

Olise had almost 80 games for reading.

Eze 111 games for QPR.

Gordon has had 60 professional games, most of them from this season.

Palace bought youngsters from the championship with plenty of game time under them so they'll already be further in their development.

1/2 of them from this season as it happens……
He also was loaned to PNE in 20/21 where over 1/2 a season he made 11 appearances, of which only 5 were starts and he never completed 90mins, so not quite sure what the comparison tells me but it doesn’t appear particularly favourable.
No end product there either.
As someone else said early it’s possibly detrimental to him to be a starter in this current team but if nothing else he sets a bit of a standard for effort, but I’d give 100% given the opportunity, doesn’t mean I’m any good.

The fact we weren't in for Olise shows how shambolic our recruitment policy is.

8 million and we weren't in for him - WHY?

I just don't see it with him. I see less in him than I do in Tom Davies who routinely gets crucified, and the only reason I can think of is his haircut and clothes.

Would love to be proved wrong, and If/when it does happen, I will be made up. But honestly, in opposition to seemingly everyone else who think he's currently our best player, I actually think we are worse for having him in the side. He doesn't actually do anything, his positional sense and defensive game are overhyped nearly as much as his end product, and yet he seems to be deemed undroppable because he runs hard.

He's been an ever present in the team as we have tumbled down the table, and but for a cross against Chelsea, I don't think he's actually directly contributed to any result.

For me, he should be used exclusively as an impact player from the bench to add a bit of pace/energy at the end of games as teams, including ours tire.

Theres a reason Ancelotti didn't seem keen, even when we clearly struggled for impact. Bernard offered more, and that says a lot.

It's ironic that so many people wouldn't have James because while he could produce moments of magic to win us points, he apparently didn't try/look interested. Now we have essentially replaced him with the exact opposite. Obviously the caveat to that is the money saved. He obviously loves the club, which is admirable. But realistically, he has a similar output to Iwobi, with much more game time, which should be worrying, but is frustratingly ignored in favour of hyperbole and sickeningly over the top plaudits.

Like I say, I'd love to be proved wrong, but I'm still waiting.

He's shown heart and a bit of quality but he needs to toughen up. Every little challenge and he goes down.

What it's saying is that Olise and Eze have more game time and more development having been playing fairly regularly in the championship.

Gordon has just started to play regularly in the premiership (3 goals and 2 assists is respectable so far in context) and has less game time, so comparing those players to him is a little unfair and he's a step behind them. Especially in our dysfunctional side.

I will say that there's no shame in rotating him rather than playing him every week.

Gordon is what he is, a 21 year old developing rapidly in a poor team and often being the stand out player. He’s not the complete player by far ,a lot of learning and developing still to come hopefully. I laughed out loud when someone said “ He wouldn’t get into a top six team”. Some of our fans are deluded. We’re a bottom four team and he’s currently one of our best players . I really look forward to the day when our team is so good that an in-form Gordon can’t get into it. Teams now know his name and style and he will find it harder to make an impact, and I really hope some of the more experienced players can step up too and match his commitment.

His deliveries Weren’t great and obviously he was stuck out at left wing back 2nd half. Which didn’t help him. But opening 20mins he was good imo.

I think Gallagher will be a great player. But he had to play for poor teams last season at West Brom and Swansea the year before, where he was hit and miss. 2 goals in 50 games. And I remember a West Brom game last season when he was at fault for 2 goals. But I think he’s the best of the 3 and will go on to have a great career.

Eze I didn’t think he was anything special and he’s nearly 24 had over 100 games in the championship. And now has 4 goals in 40 for palace. I think he will always be a mid table player.

Olise Is very talented but, I think maybe like Gordon he’s getting overhyped a bit. Should have scored yesterday. He also had virtually 2 full seasons in the championship.

I think for some players like Gordon. His Everton career has been stop start. This is the fist time in his life he’s had a run of starts. He hasn’t had the opportunity to play a full season in the championship. He went to Preston, started quite well. Then they sack the manager and he’s out the team. And I also think he picked up and injury. He still hasn’t played 50 competitive games. And made his debut over 4 years ago.

The 3 palace players have played over a 100 games and eze has played nearly 150.
I think Gordon can’t be judged along side them 3 until he’s had another 30/40 games.

Who was the last player we bought from the championship(im not counting godfrey) ? Exactly the player's we should be looking at... Bowen was another one a while back
