2021/22 Anthony Gordon

I think that's a bit sensationalist tbh. He was asking the boss what he needed to improve to be picked. If you at your job was passed over constantly for projects or promotions, wouldn't you ask your superior what you needed to work on to be considered? "banging on Ancelottis door DEMANDING an explanation"?

No. Take the blinkers off.

He wasn't 'constantly passed over'

Player development is continual, in training, every day coaching.

Let's call a spade, a spade. It hit the headlines for the reason it did;

Everton teenager Anthony Gordon demanded explanation for being left out, Ancelotti reveals

Ancelotti played it coy, talked up the positives of over exuberance of youth - but whatever way you try and spin it - it was misguided. That's why Ancelotti said this;

Ancelotti: "I didn't explain to him, but he wanted an explanation"

In other words, 'koff lad.

I said it at the time, still saying it now.

A long time later Gordon acknowledged he wasn't fit enough, or good enough then.

Benitez said the same about his fitness too, which the player agreed with.

Maybe Carlo Ancelotti knew better than Anthony Gordon. Maybe.

Usually follows the same pattern as well

Young player plays one match and isn't amazing, so a certain type of online fan writes them off

That opinion is then locked in and will not be changed. Ever

Even good performances are viewed in a manner as to find reasons to criticise, because heaven forfend someone has to admit they were wrong about something on the internet

Gordon has been written off and his critics will do whatever they can to see that justified, because as far as they're concerned if he succeeds then they have failed, and that just won't do

We've been having the same sorts of arguments over DCL for years in his threads

Ultimately we get the club we deserve at the end of the day
Great post mate.

Overhyping can almost be as bad too when it's done on limited evidence.

As @Eggs said, Gordon does certain things you just don't see very often a lad his age and experience do.

His finishing isn't 'bad' either - it's just not brilliant - can his final ball improve - yup, can his decision making improve - yup (can argue that he was no worse than Richy in that regard though)

the no end product thing grates hugely though. Ultimately he scored 4 compared to Richy with 7 last season in 300+ minutes less, think it was 2 to 6 in assists too (although from memory 3-4 of Richys literally where shots coming off one of ours and going in - DCL and Gordon both scored that way as I think did Holgate).

Gordon right now if he never improves at all besides Stamina is a good solid level premiership player, if he shows even a 5-10% improvement each of the next 2-3 seasons we will have a very special player indeed.

Desire to improve which he most certainly has combined with natural ability will take you very far.

I'm fully expecting Gordon to kick on again from last season and prove what a player he is and can be. He's got the right mentality and drive. You can see it, the way he plays. He'll be determined to fill that void left by the sale of Richarlison. He'll be firing!

Let's hope so mate.

Big, big ask that though.

Nope.

I still think he was foolish/naïve to go banging on Ancelotti's door demanding an explanation why he wasn't involved vs Spurs. As he acknowledged, as I said January last year;

His time at Everton still also does remind me of Kieran Dowell. Don't forget, Dowell is only 3 years older - won the world cup with England U20s/was hitting double figures for Forest in the Championship at 19. For a period, fans had huge hopes around Dowell. "Why did we loan him out" etc.

Gordon has benefitted from game time/exposure from being in a god awful Everton team but Ancelotti managed him perfectly. He wasn't ready to be starting games then - which he later admitted himself. Later, Benitez said the same thing - he wasn't fit enough to play/Gordon again, agreed.

Even now I think he has a bit of Deulofeu/sparrow lungs about him. He's continuing to work on that, and like everyone is now saying - if his final ball comes he could be a tremendous player. If it doesn't, he goes into a long line of decent players.

Problem I would say Dowell had was he didn't seem to have the desire to self improve, also he lacked basic fundamentals that are hard to improve on like pace physically weak etc.

Beautiful striker of a ball though.

Just for comparison Lampards first season at Chelsea 37 league games 5 goals.

Gordon 34 league games 4 goals.

Lampard also played in a far better side and a lot more minutes. And was 23yo compared to 20 with 4 seasons at west ham as a starter and over 140+ games in the division already played.

And we wonder why young players at Everton get slated way too soon.
Yes young players coming through get ruined exactly what happened to Barkley used to watch he constantly taking abuse from our fans for the most trivial things like passing backwards and not playing 40 yarders every pass. No wonder he run his contract down and left, Obviously better money and club competing for trophies helped.

Do you REALLY think a teenager would go to CARLO FN ANCELOTTI and DEMAND an explanation? This isn't some no-mark who players can't figure out why they are even there like Silva, it's Ancelotti. Even if he was full of himself, of which he doesn't seem to be ever in his interviews or anything, would it not be more likely than not that he asked Carlo about it and some sensationalist headline is more catchy?

*edit* just going to quantify it, I get that's how you see things, I respect that. I just can't imagine the lad banging on Carlo Ancelottis door like is reported. If he was someone like Lingard or Pogba with a huge ego I could see that. Just doesn't make sense to me.

…posters say it as it is, his end product is his weakness in terms of goals & assists. It’s hardly ‘eating their words’ if he can make big improvements, everybody will be chuffed as we’ll have a top player on our hands.
Yes he’s got another 3 seasons to keep improving and more. He’s had a breakthrough season and put in a shift in every single game with glimpses of ability. Hopefully end product will improve with more and more game time, I’d imagine it will hopefully with DCL leading the line he’s got more to aim at as well. Think we need to remain calm over him and let him develop without expecting him to pull up trees every game.

Have to disagree.

Will say one thing though - those overhyping him aren't doing the lad any favours.

Unrealistic expectations - comparisons to Frank Lampard etc.

If that's from.me about Lampard mate, it's not saying he's gonna be this or that.

It's simply showing that making a judgement about end product on a 20yo is daft. And using a very clear example of a players development who most certainly did us e end product (but not always at the level he's remembered at being).

What ultimately classifies as overhyping anyways.

Gordon in the last 3 months if the season was arguably the second most important of our outfield players (after Richy) a case could also be made for Iwobi - who was massive in some games.

Easy. Tell Newcastle to jog on. Everything happens in context and we can’t sell Gordon after last season. Just can’t. I don’t think he’s going to be a super star or anything like that, but the trajectory to impact player is clear as day. Hence the potential bid from the richest club in the world.
