Are we at the stage where we consider a mass rebuild in the next 7 days or not? Stick or twist?

Keane is absolutely not a Prem defender - hence him clearly being nowhere near good enough for one of the worst teams in it.

He’ll stay regardless as we do actually need 4 central defenders.

Southampton would rather sign Harwood-Bellis for 15m. Younger, potential to be called into the England squad in next 2-3 years and crucially schooled in the Man. City academy so he's a good fit for how Southampton play.

Leicester will get a FFP points deduction at some point so I don't think spending 5m and big wages on a 31 year old is something they'd consider at all.

I think the only prem team I can remember being linked with Michael Keane in last three years was Forest when they first came up and they were signing 20 players in one transfer window but it didn't happen.

Best chance of getting rid of Holgate was Wilder liking him and feeling he'd be a decent player to get them back up but no interest during the summer and they've signed Harry Souttar on loan since.

Unsurprisingly there isn't a market for premier league reserves who last looked decent in 2020.

The myth that Holgate or Keane are going to bring in any £££ this window persists with some sadly. They can't grasp the reality we now
exist in. They really do not grasp players are people and a contract plays both ways.

Yes the likes of Leicester and Southampton are facing (albeit different) issues re probable relegation this year but seem to be almost planning for that happening.

If we were to join them this season (I don't think we will btw) Our issues will be multiple. Have we inserted 40% wage reductions for all playing staff if relegated like the above teams have? I suspect not. The financial stress on Everton could eventually become fatal.

I was just thinking to myself about the players that we all think are pretty much surplus to requirements or we may need to cash in on to improve the club overall. Below I have come up with a list of players, the fee we might be able to get at short notice and what we would save on wages if they left based on estimated wages found online:
  • Michael Keane: Fee £5m and est wages of £3,848,000
  • Mason Holgate: Fee £5m and est wages of £3,848,000
  • Abdoulaye Doucoure: Fee £15m and est wages of £6,240,000
  • Sack Sean.
  • Dominic Calvert Lewin: Fee £15m and est wages of £6,240,000
  • Neal Maupay: Fee £5m and est wages of £2,080,000
Total Transfer Fees: £105m

Total Wages saved this season: £24.336m

If you assume we may get a downpayment of 20% of the transfer fees (seems to be the going rate) that would be £21m in cash right now plus a saving of the committed wages of £24.336, making a total of £45.336m cash in the bank to spend before the deadline.

If we put 20% down like most teams seem to do that could mean that in the last week of the window, we could feasibly buy players for a combined fee of over £226m inc their wage commitments for the season.

Obviously, these are just basic numbers on the back of a cig packet sort of thing but I was asking myself the question of whether I think it would be worth having a mass sale this week (with the upheaval that brings in terms of our next few fixtures while they settle) just so that we can get the overall squad in a stronger position to try and give us some optimism going into the season as a whole.

Would you be happy with selling them all and would you trust Thelwell to spend that money on that many players in such a short space of time and get it right?

Agree but so much easier said than done

True mate, all the ones I listed, any club bringing them in won't be exactly rushing either, so you can imagine if they leave it'll be late on maybe deadline day with zero ability to really then use whatever gotten ourselves.

you’re more insane than me

For me something needs to change and fast. I don't live in the City anymore but came to visit my old man for the weekend and a few things stood out. There is a massive bias for the red side in the city and that never used to be the case. I get that we were playing away so some fans wouldn't be present but still I was surprised how many red shirts there were compared to blue. I saw a stall in the city centre selling footy merchandise and it was completely red apart from a handful of Everton scarfs neatly packed behind the red ones. I saw nothing else of Everton anywhere.

I visited the outside of the new stadium too and you wouldn't have a clue it was Evertons stadium unless someone told you. I didn't see a single club crest near it or anything to indicate what it was. It makes you fear that we will ever actually play there at all.

I remember around the Ancelotti times when new players joined they would all comment how they had joined a massive club and I always found that cringeworthy. I think it's even less applicable now. We really are small time now and I think to neutrals, they see us as we may have seen Sunderland around 10 years ago. A club with a loyal fan base but rubbish team who are destined for relegation and haven't won anything for what seems an eternity.

Something needs to change urgently because the club is fast becoming not just second rate but perhaps even third. The footy is poor, the ownership is a circus and if things continue as they are then i fear that only worse is to come in the future.
