Arouna Kone

That's an easy argument to make in retrospect. Any player costs wages and so forth (I assume that's where your 14 million sum comes from), so no matter the up front cost they're always a gamble. He was still relatively cheap - see spurs and soldado. Add his wages to a far bigger fee and it's an even worse deal. Plus I dispute he was crap pre-injury. He'd done OK at Wigan and had a majorly disrupted pre-season with us due to Ramadan and fasting.

He gets serious grief but I'll give Kone far more leeway than the likes of van der meyde and Drenthe who were just piss pots

So now it's not the injury but it's Ramadan

Soldado was a quality player before Spurs what an absolutely awful comparison.

Kone wasn't good enough to start for Everton before he came here, was too expensive and too old to make sense as a back up and yes he was awful before he got injured. That Stevenage game was probably his worst performance for Everton and then he missed he open goal v hull.

I know it's the natural reaction from some sections of fans to put the boot in when a player is suffering but really what's the point in all this.
I doubt anyone thought we were getting the finished article with Kone and clearly with his confidence this low it's hard to suggest he should be starting. And he's not.
But he's not a terrible footballer who deserves some of the pretty nasty abuse he's getting. He's done well and sometimes very well at some decent European clubs and in a decent international side. May not mean he was a good signing for us but plenty of people who had watched him properly felt his intelligent movement and touch in key areas could add something to our squad.
There were signs that they were right earlier in the season but you could also sense he was one poor performance away from being slaughtered by sections of the crowd.
I'm not going to speculate on why some fans need a player to hate or how they select them, but we need a strong squad and we can either get behind players who aren't exactly what we want or pretend they're a lot worse than they are.
Maybe I'm better asking my shrink what this is all about.
This isn't aimed at anyone with rational reasons to think he's not good enough for us so please no nonsense about not accepting other people's views.

When you say he has done very well at big Europeans clubs (plural) are you talking about Roda JC & Levante?

When you say he has done very well internationally are you talking about his goal record of over 4 games per goal, he's never played for Ivory Coast while at Everton btw.

A lot of people seem to have opinions to big up Kone but none of these are based on facts

Naismith is younger and a more proven prem goalscorer. Norwich will see a return on their investment.

More to the point, we got Naismith on a free and have, over the long term, replaced him with someone older and less talented AND paid a £6m fee to do so.

Not convinced by that logic - Naismith was never prolific and we signed Kone when 29 too. Plus, if Naismith gets injured Norwich would be in a similar boat. Which is speculation of course. No, my argument is that seems to be the going rate for average forwards.

You realise that all muslims would be fasting for ramadan dont you? Not just Kone so its not really an "excuse" for him as im sure hes done it his entire career and we dont hear theae "excuses" for others, i assumed people were using it as more of a joke on here.

also he was pretty bad before he joined us as i posted at the time of signing...i was amazed we wasted £6mil on him and was pretty furious.

This is true re: Ramadan. But I don't think we had any other Muslims in the squad to compare the effect at that time (could be wrong, happy if proven). Plus, we have heard it said before...

I strongly suspect we'll never agree on Kone. Fair do's if you've always thought he was gash, I just feel the vitriol he receives is harsh.

Ps he was garbage the other day. No taking away from that!

Never said it wasn't the injury. That's clearly played a part. I was countering your assertion he was rubbish pre-injury. The fasting was pretty injury which arguably played a part.

On the contrary, the soldado example is an excellent one. A player widely considered excellent who bombed. Thus demonstrating how any transfer 'whole package' can go belly up. I.e they are all a risk regardless of how fans perceive the quality of individual players.

Okay well I've got a bit ratty about this in the past so I'll try this as a non rhetorical and serious question. Why is it important enough to some posters to slag a player off that you almost completely misquote someone.
Please with all respect don't take the opportunity again to tell me I've written something I haven't. It's obvious I know what I've said so either discuss what's been said or don't respond.

no it's an awful example becuase Soldado had pedigree, he had an excellent record at Valencia, had an unreal record in Europe, he was bought to start & had good sell on value

Kone had none of those things going for him. It hasn't gone "belly up" for him here it's gone almost exactly how it went at the 1 big club He has played at previously, Poor goal scoring record & a poor injury record.
