Why? Best non-Italian centre back at the Euro's was easily Carvalho (the former Chelski defender not William) and he's 38.

The idea that you can't be a great player post-30 is nonsense with the fitness levels and medical teams/technology nowadays.

I am sure some are. I think Zlatan is past his best. Ashley Williams has been a good pro for Swansea, but he's had his best days. Stones signalled he was unsettled a year ago. A stop-gap replacement is not what I expected

Not a fan of Williams myself, but not a bad player tbf. To put a spanner in the works, this is the first time that he hasnt had a summer off, being involved with Wales. We all know how players tend to suffer a bit after a summer tournament and I think at his stage of his career, it might take a bit out of him. Can we afford to have a player who might struggle towards the business end of the season.

Not a fan because of his age, but needs must, maybe another Richard Gough - David Weir moment signed in desperation, but served a very good purpose, we are very poor defensively!

32 in 3 weeks. I don't call a 32 year old a great signing when Stones wants out, jags is old and Distin has gone. Should have been looking for a young central defender a year ago.

Yes , 32/33 is still a good age for a CB but most go downhill quickly after 34 , is it a good idea to spend 10m on a player who may just have 1 good season left in him ?
