I think trying to gather the thoughts of football fans is one of the hardest things to do. Football fans change their minds by the minute, take for example the last few months. It goes a little something like:
- Moshiri Joins - great news, things look good.
- Martinez sacked - great news, how much of a role did FM play ?
- Koeman in - A lot of peoples first choice (realistically) jesus its a new era.
- Walsh in - Wow ! What a recruitment, surely the billionaire means business.
- Everton start off well, good points picked up at times we would through them away under RM.
At that point everything seemed to be going in the right direction, could the sleeping giant finally get its a**e out of bed ?
- Top targets either don't work out, bigger club comes in or wage increase on the table.
- Stones leaves the club, was coming sooner or later.
- Koeman believes Romelu will waste his career here.
- Everton take a hammering at Chelsea.
Just some of the snippets both pro's and con's that we have experienced lately, most from the end of last season to now.
As typical with Everton, it seemed like we always had one good moment followed by one bad moment. Hence the reason I say football fans change their minds all the time. Lord knows how tough it is actually running a club for example.
What the defeat at Chelsea done was bring us back down to earth with gravity and a little hint of realisation, a realisation of how far Everton have to go until we can match what is in my opinion, a pretty weak Chelsea side compared to the recent teams under Mourinho - certainly on paper anyway (just my opinion). As a result we now know that in order to go above Chelsea it will be a long process, that's before we get to united, Liverpool or city.
Following the 5-0 hammering, Koeman has now come out with some concerning comments, comments that hurt regardless of how Moshiri likes to translate them. We said for months that we wanted a cut throat manager that will get rid of the dead wood and improve us. So far we have had a mixed bag of results and still sit amongst the top teams, even though it feels all doom and gloom right now, thanks to Koeman. He isn't perfect.
In reality though has Koeman just said what we all think deep down ? Barcelona are bigger than Everton, make no mistake about it, but it doesn't take away the fact Everton is my club, your club and most importantly OUR club. If Romelu fulfils potential then lets all remove that last sentence and ask ourselves the question; if we weren't Evertonians which Romelu isn't, then would we move to Barcelona ? I know the answer for most people.
Koeman just gives us a little realism, sure he shouldn't say what he did but I for one am sick of all the typical, pre scripted answers that people give to the media. I love the fact that Carragher and Neville openly rip each other instead of towing the 'media image' of things like At the end of the day, over the moon, its all about the team (even though Im only here for the money).
We are where we are, we are lower to mid table right now, we had a old stadium, we have a small fanbase compared to Europe's elite, and that is something that we need to build on for the next 50 years, yes it could take that long, instead of Rome wasn't built in a day, Liverpool, United, Munich and others weren't built in a season.
We have some catching up to do, it will take a while, Koeman will be gone, Lukaku will be gone, but we wont be. The club wont be.
Our history wont be. Right now we have to believe that Koeman will manage us into a trophy, Moshiri will build a dynasty, and Romelu will fire us to the said trophy to begin our new era in a new home.
Patience is required people, we need to stick together. WHATS OUR NAME ?!
