That cant be right. No manager is going to want a defender to keep hold of the ball in a situation where they're outnumbered and squeezed in terms of space.

I can only conclude from that post that you didn't see much of Martinez Wigan side

Positives

Browning, Duffy, Oviedo, Naismith, Kennedy, Junior, Grant, McAleny, Gueye and Vellios getting a game.

Robles didn't necessarily makes saves but he came out quickly and got his big frame in the way.

Martinez was instructing the team to pass the ball quicker and to get forward.

Junior looked quite neat on the ball.

Our movement was quite fluid and Roberto wasn't afraid to change things around.

Negatives

Their forward was pretty quick and I'd have expected us to put Jagielka on him and leave Duffy free. We didn't and Shane got done for pace a few times.

Vellios and Anichebe both looked isolated and we created very little.

We look pretty one-paced and there is hardly any creativity coming from midfield.

Absolutely spot-on. In fact, I'd give even more credit to Robles; I couldn't see Howard making those one-on-one stops to be honest.

Just back .. a few quick thoughts

Joel did well

I like the kit

King Kenny stinks of piss

Never ever ever a pen*

Duffy is not going to make it

*May well have been a pen, haven't seen any replays

Tried to watch the highlights from Yesterday (bought the package and watched the game yesterday already) and it's still doing this 'you need to buy the match pack, click here for blah blah blah' it's quite annoying.

Some thoughts from ESPN on the game and in general:

reading this... not a lot of surprises when you look at the team out. didn't see the game but emphasises to me that Oviedo and Velios both deserve more opportunities. The Jags incident for first goal sounds worrying if he is adapting too much, the last thing we need is him losing confidence. Hoping this was just one of those things and Martinez realises that Jags has to play as naturally as possible even if his own ideals have to be adjusted for now. Fellaini given the armband... love this. He will thrive given as much responsibility as we can. I think this lad still has gears to go into that will move us forward to the top 4 if we keep him for the next few years

Didn't see the game, would someone be so kind and summerise the game in a few words?

Cheers gents.

Pretty scrappy, 10 changes at half time, basically 2 teams each half that had never played together, mixture of kids and first team players in each, first game of the pre season, against the winners of their league at the end of their pre season, makes the 2-1 defeat actually quite a decent scoreline but the quality of our play pretty inevitable..
Few chances of worth from us, several from them.

That being said, whilst you could easily tell the difference in quality between the first team and the reserves/youth players, some of the lads equitted themselves pretty well. Junior in particular caught my eye.

Clearly more of a fitness exercise but we played some occasionally very good short passing play, little to offer up front, but still scored and missed a couple of good chances, dire in defence on occasion.

Nothing particularly great, nothing to be upset about... a bit of a shoulder shrugger of a game really... meh... next.

To sum up in a couple of words which was what you asked...
Meh.. alright s'pose.

Typical friendly game we gave away 2 soft goals Jags & Duffy at fault not much creation give Roberto time it was a team of youngsters who were glad to get a game - Vellios goal was a good well taken goal with the assist from Baines !
