I think the issue is if they are being told that even then they need to short pass it.

exactly theirs a reason why Utd, City and Chelsea will remain the big 3 because whilst they play good football they acknowledge that sometimes you have to rought it up a bit. tika taka only works when you have some of the best talent in the world, Wigan hadn't a chance from the start and neither do we IMO, Im all for us playing good football but we need to combine that with some of moyes style of play keep it on the floor but when we are under pressure just boot it up

Think that's fair comment, the other reason is most other countries style is very different pressing hard (as here) invariably ends up as a foul - not so in our league. We interpret the laws different, fannying around on the edge of the box invites a clattering the ball is in the net and the defender crys foul to no avail.

I don't like the hoofing but it's needs must when the devil drives.

I would.

Just imagine actually being Tim Howard right now.

Boss.

ok i will clarify my position - if i could choose to be an everton goalkeeper that wasnt joel then being tim howard would not quite be as good as being joel as i believe joel had a good game this means tim howards position may be at threat this is why i said i wouldnt like to be tim howard right now but you are in fact correct in saying it would indeed be 'boss' to be tim howard as he is in fact rich and also plays for the club that we do indeed support

Positives

Browning, Duffy, Oviedo, Naismith, Kennedy, Junior, Grant, McAleny, Gueye and Vellios getting a game.

Robles didn't necessarily makes saves but he came out quickly and got his big frame in the way.

Martinez was instructing the team to pass the ball quicker and to get forward.

Junior looked quite neat on the ball.

Our movement was quite fluid and Roberto wasn't afraid to change things around.

Negatives

Their forward was pretty quick and I'd have expected us to put Jagielka on him and leave Duffy free. We didn't and Shane got done for pace a few times.

Vellios and Anichebe both looked isolated and we created very little.

We look pretty one-paced and there is hardly any creativity coming from midfield.

good summing up. thought the midfield was getting by passed and everything decent was coming down the flanks, need somebody to mix it up a bit

Manager's post match thoughts here: http://www.evertonfc.com/everton-news/

Seemed to be stressing the youngsters getting game time was the key for today, but also acknowledges the rustiness of some performances.

Pretty spot on tbh. Know one surely was expecting much from this game? It was purely about getting people back on a football pitch in a competitive game. He also threw in several youngsters to cast an eye over. There was also what? 8-9 guys still missing from that bunch.

It was the very start of the road to a new season. Simples!

Pretty sure I saw a 3-4-2-1 at one point...biggest thing is the distinct gap between the back and midfield which caused a fair few problems in general.

At times it was more like 2 at the back! Even when we had 3, they were 30 yards apart! And the MF weren't looking for the ball from them so they were putting each other under pressure with their square passing.

Seems strange that we've got dozens of pages analysing our first per-season run-out when in reality, like every other team, it was about getting a few miles in the legs and oxygen in the lungs after the excesses/rest and recuperation of the close season.

Chill pills need stocking up on.

Happens every year, mate. We play some kids, pay terrible lose and get massive threads knew jerking all over the house about how bad we are and whether we'd see those kids more in the year.

And then the season basically goes as it always does.

We're typically going to fume as soon as we give away a cheap goal because we were arsing around passing it about in defence.

At least Moyes played those percentages.....

....lad.
