That's not the issue here. If there's any chance of a Juve offer being on the table then he's got every right to pursue it

People on here seem very confident that we've got other irons in the fire, but I'm afraid I don't share that optimism. It really isn't the end of the world if this lad doesn't sign so long as we leave ourselves enough time to get somebody else, but we have to allow ourselves that time

A public courting from the club with another player would have the twofold effect of both assuring the fan base that they haven't put all the eggs in one basket while also letting Witsel know we won't wait forever

They haven't said anything about Witsel either.

In fact, it could be argued the fella at Villa is the back up but we know of him cause Di Matteo mentioned it, not Everton.

You would think that if Juve are Witsels preference, then with a slight increase of the offer, in combination with him threatening to see out his contract, it would be sorted. That said, the piece only says 'reportedly', so who knows? So much rubbish in the nedia, how is anyone actually meant to decide what's reliable?

Something odd that happened on the OS earlier - the First Team squad list. It jumped up to 4 pages but Tarashaj and Stekelenburg disappeared - has now been restored to what it was previously. If they're editing the squad list, something could be close.
