Beer, revisited

The last place I drank that was in a bar in Ghent ( Belgium )

You had to take a shoe off and leave it behind the bar as a deposit to make sure you handed the wooden stand back !
Just read on Untapped why the bottle is shaped so. It was to hang on mail coaches as the drivers couldn’t leave the coach to have a glug. I thought it was because Pawel Kwak was a pretentious t*at!

I went to one bar in Gent where their home brew came in similar glass, but it must have been at least twice the size. You had to hand over your shoe, which was then put in a cage. The cage would then be hoisted up to the ceiling and shoe returned once you finished the beer. Good times, great city.

May as well have put you in the cage until you paid your bar tab lol

If it was overlooking the canal, it was the same bar that had obviously upgraded from putting the shoes onto a shelf !

You’re right, it’s a great city. Hundreds of bars, beautiful architecture and the people are incredibly friendly, yet it’s not really on the “ must visit “ destination list.

Yep, great place. The bars that stick in my mind were t’velootje , with the bikes hanging off the ceiling and the landlord looked like he played keyboards in Focus and The Trollenkelder. The landlord of The Trollenkelder had been to Liverpool and was describing a stay behind “ you go out one door, they close the curtains, you go in another door and carry on drinking “.
