2021/22 Ben Godfrey

He’s a liability at centre back, particularly alongside holgate.

Height isn’t everything, if you can judge the flight of the ball better than everyone else, have a good leap and attack the ball, no problem. If you have none of those things and you’re a short arse then you’re going to get found out trying to play centre back in this league.

Positioning a big weakness as well.

Really needed a manager like Moyes when he was 17/18/19/20 to really drill him on the basics. At the moment a fur coat no knickers defender.

Basics like heading the ball with conviction and competing with physical strength should be given pre-requisites for Central Defenders. I liked the early Ben Godfrey but am concerned about his lack of conviction in the box. No attempt at all to challenge for that cross to Coady....an example of how they just gave up yesterday or couldn't be bothered challenging. Others are guilty of course.

Young Branthwaite at least has the height and enthusiasm to have a chance. It's late in the day like...but it might be better reverting Ben to full back and giving the lad a go. Keane is a spent force and too fragile to take part fully in these desperate remaining games... maybe the bench.

I agree on this in so far as he reacted late but I don't doubt his willingness to compete for the ball.
I thought Brantwaithe looked every bit the 'young' defender in his last appearance, very indecisive

I don't see his future at Everton as a CB, he is not good at winning headers. There were a few moments in that extra period where I genuinely worried that a flick on was going to do us in.

We need an attacking right or left back and have him help on defense or pick one or two moments each match to burst forward.
