2021/22 Ben Godfrey

Rio Ferdinand is one of the best CBs this country has ever produced. He would have been an awful RB. Godfrey is nowhere near Ferdinand level of ability but by trade is a CB. We should not be judging Godfrey on the games he played there. Kevin Ratcliffe was an awful LB but he was an awesome CB. We don't here much talk of his games at LB now. We should just be grateful Godfrey is able to do a patch it job there. Imagine asking Mina or Keane to play RB. Until Godfrey gets a run of games I his preferred position CB alongside a settled partner he is being unfairly judged. What these games are proving is he could never be our regular RB and the club need to get there finger out and buy one. He might ultimately not be good enough at CB but that will only be fair to judge once he's had a decent run in a settled back 4.

He sprinted back from the CB position. As he is a CB playing out of position, that goal is on him sadly.
When the RB narrows the angle to a fraction of the goal for the GK he's done his job...he was scrambling to get over because others had deserted the CB position and he made up that ground to do enough so that Pickford gets a strong hand on that Martial shot.

Thought he was really good today apart from:

1: Not putting a cross field ball to Gray in the first half and instead running with the ball.

2: Letting Sancho trick him into lunging for the ball.

Dont blame him for the goal whatsoever. He had to come inside to close down their player because our two midfielders hadnt tracked him back.

After the international break I imagine he will be back to full fitness.

The whole United attacking strategy was to target our RB position all afternoon. Benitez was wise to it and had the CBs covering at all times. But BG has done enough to persuade his manager that come January he doesn't need to get a new face in to deputise for Coleman.

I agree with the comments re. Godfrey being played out of position and taking flak for it.

He's shown he's great at his own trade and it'll be fascinating to see the fight for the 2 places if Keane and Mina keep todays form up.

I stand to be inundated with one finger replies but I'd have had Kenny at RB today, or any other day for that matter doing the job he's paid for (when Seamus is out) rather than playing a very decent player out of position and making him maybe lose confidence in himself.

Was good to see him monster Martial for pace in the opening minutes given his acceleration hasn't quite been up to his normal levels since he came back.

Looks to be getting his fitness back thankfully, he looked to have an extra yard of pace today. His positioning let him down a couple of times, but, like the Ben Godfrey of old, his athleticism bailed him out.

Funnily enough he is a better left back than a right back. We definitely need a specialist in this position and hopefully he will learn in time to be a good CB - although Benitez said something about his height that makes me think it won't be under his watch.
Small samples at play there. I think if he had more run at LB, and also played there without the more incompetent Holgate at RB for teams to target, the outlook would change

…thought their main threat came from his side today.

As I’ve said, wingers stand full-backs up and even with his pace Godfrey is lost in those situations. Sancho did it to him today & that’s exactly what I mean. He’s a CB playing RB, he’s doing an ok job but he’s definitely not the answer.

We need a conventional RB who can nullify wingers and support the space behind the CBs. We need a RB who is composed in possession, can play little triangles and offer threat in the top third.

I really like Godfrey but it’s not Godfrey at RB.

We've got a RB, we need an emergency stand in....and that IS Godfrey.
