Had the issues of playing out of position too. We needed him as a full back at times but he openly said he preferred cb. In the early years he rarely played there. That can impact a players development.

You can’t play how we play and have a CB who doesn’t dominate in the air

Generally it should be a blend, you usually have one quick one, and one with aerial prowess. You can't just have two big grocks. Obviously great if you have two defenders with all the attributes but that is rare. We have Tarkowski who is the dominant header of the ball.

….reckon the club offered him that contract because they don’t want him to leave for free next summer, he’s a versatile defender who can cover a number of positions and we’ll struggle financially to replace him.

He can still cover if Branthwaite leaves and is in a great position to run his current deal down.
Hes crap. If he's turned down that contract he's going to be sold this summer. We will not struggle to replace a championship level defender on 70k a week

I quite like the lad, and think at times he showed there was a real player in there. There was an away game last season he came in completely from the cold and was fantastic, including a world class goal line clearance.

With that said, if we can get £10m for him and get rid of his fairly big wage, I doubt we’ll struggle to replace him.

I thought he started great, got a call up to the england squad.... and since then it's been a downward spiral, injuries, new managers etc all playing a part.

But, he is no where near good enough to start centre half, due to his poor heading & positional play and he isn't consistent enough to be a full back and has limited cross.

Squad player at best, he won't be missed at all.
Another Holgate with a bit more pace

Ben holds the cards if he is on £70k a week, if he doesn’t get a better deal he will sit tight for twelve months then walk away a free agent, and he will cop for a large signing on fee plus good wages, that’s why players have agents sorting their future out.

He won't get a better deal than now. He gets a % of the transfer fee + he gets a fee for leaving + signing on fee and his wages will be higher.

If he doesn't leave he will end up frozen out the squad because there's no benefit to Everton playing him. It's not like he's a significantly better player than others in the squad.
