I agree with what you are saying about Onyekuru, but I think simply rating Bernard performances on the basis of goals or assists is a bit narrow minded? He pulls defenders all over the shop and makes room for the other guys to score. If you based your opinion of Cesc Fabregas solely on goals / assists he doesn’t look that good a player? In the prem he was something like one goal in seven and one assist in three or four (something like that anyway) but he was an integral part of the Arsenal and Chelsea teams? I get that you want him to contribute more in terms of goals / assists, we all do, but I genuinely think his contribution is greater than that.

The difference is position. If Bernard was playing central midfield I would rate his last season highly. But he is playing as a wing and those players have to offer more in and around the box. I get that his game is more but the part that is missing is the most important part.

Sometimes I think we don’t deserve players like Bernard. I guess some people would prefer Kilbane or Van der Meyde on the left? Bernard is a joy to behold when he’s on his game, and there’s no reason to think he won’t build on what was a very decent first season. Onyekuru not being able to force himself into the national team and not being able to get a work permit tells us that maybe he just isn't good enough to play in the Premiership.

Bernard is excluded from one of the strongest teams on the planet and it isn't that he isn't good enough , moreso it seems that he is paying the price for not being able to live up to the huge expectation that the Brazilian football world had for him.

Richarlison- needs to be much better as a creator if he's going to play winger long term.
Sigurdsson- more involvement in play through the midfield although he did this better later in the season I think.
DCL- Goals obviously but more specifically getting shots away from more dangerous areas.
Lookman- I guess work harder and when he does play do the simple thing sometimes and don't force it.
Gomes- Pass forward more frequently and become more of a playmaker when teams are sitting deep against us.

It's just to me Bernard is being massively overrated when his area of improvement is the most important and hardest to do. And unlike Richarlison and Sigurdsson his flaws aren't masked by the ball going in the net a lot.

A decent rest and a good preseason, I reckon he’ll be one of our star players next year - felt like the assist & goal stats were going against his confidence last season, but he’s showes us what he can do that aside and I think he’ll be more mentally prepared for the season ahead.

Doing all of the stuff he does in possession closer to the box. That's really the key for me. Instead of playing a clever backheel 30 yards from goal do it 20 and we are in business.

A lot of people acknowledge that Bernard has to do better with his contribution via scoring/assisting but he's one of the better players in the squad and his link up with Digne is vital he's one of the last players we should be having digs at
