Black History Month

Home of the Archers. Needs burning and then shooting into space for that alone.
What? Pip and Stella have just embarked on a Lezza romance and Ruth is fuming because Pip didn’t confide in her. Fortunately Rob has lost his custody battle so Helen’s anorexia is subsiding.
Jill’s Orange cake only came second at The Flower and Produce show to Joy but at least Jazza and Tracy are finally married! It’s top drama!

There do appear to be a lot of women so best to keep schtum.

Really enjoyed the Adrian Chile's documentary Whites vs Blacks (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b084fmgv) which featured West Brom prominently.

Not to single out West Brom, but some of the crap Black players suffered in the past was dreadful and the Documentary surfaces it really well.

Ian Wright fronted another good one too, think it was 'out of our skins'. Might be a bit out with the title.

You've missed my points entirely. I wasn't asking for white history month at any point. Nor would I. I find such orchestrated themes tedious enough for an evening or a day, let alone taking over the Airways for a month.

We have racism still over here and it is abhorrent. Racism in Britain is part of am entirely different culture with its own story and should be addressed here by our own institutions. We shouldn't be having to listen to US stories about their issues for a month. It kind of suggests racism is a US thing and makes it easier for racists here to fob it off as irrelevant.
I know Joe Louis was known as 'the Brown Bomber', but this is getting ridiculous... ;)

I don't listen to music on the radio, I don't entertain any channels with advertising. This leaves me with a choice of 8 hours of women's hour that is what Radio 4 seems to have become while I'm working in the shed or 8 hours of Radio 4 extra - which is a little more varied and interested. However I've been reminded of last year now when it became wall to wall black history programmes - about the US. My other alternative is just silence - which is a bit boring.
You lazy-bones, get yourself onto the podcast scene, or some of those audiobooks. Seems a bit convenient to focus on 8 hours of women's hour as the crux of the issue. Who do you want to listen to? What topics? Presented by anyone special?

I didn't mean to ... but if people want to argue a point I can't just let it lie!
You were a teacher? children are morons, it's what makes them children. Did you have such a lack of patience and hypersensitivity to erm, issues not directly detrimental to yourself back then? TLDR, have you become a bit of an old fuddy-duddy as you've ticked the milometer over?

I don't feel qualified to post in this thread. I'm very much white middle class. I know I have white privilege. I acknowledge that people with white privilege are part of the problem but I don't feel like I'm racist. Is that enough to be part of the solution?

I have a very old school photo from Wirral Grammar School in 1987. There's roughly 1,000 people in the photo. It's one of those massive panoramic ones. There is 1 non-white student and 1 non-white teacher. Black people just didn't exist in my upbringing.

I now work for a ftse100 company that has a very well advertised inclusion and diversity policy yet there are still very few black and ethnic people in my office so as a result I have no black friends. Again I acknowledge my white privilege and that I'm not racist but is that enough to be part of the solution?

Genuine question - Is it enough in 2023 to crack on with life thinking that racism isn't my problem, it's not a part of my world or should I be doing more? If so, how does a middle aged white guy do more?

Educate me GOT

There is a decent book written by a UK author for the UK audience that you might want to grab and read. It's not perfect at all, but it at least may get you started on this topic (although you recognizing the privilege of your status above is indeed a start).

Why I'm No Longer Talking (to White People) About Race

Is this about being black or about how brilliant women are?

Have the feminists hijacked another thing to beat their drum as if they're still being enslaved like they were in the 1960s when everything good was done by women but men took the credit and caused cancer by smoking their white privileged in men only meeting rooms?

Or is it about black history, when men and women were exploited by white men and women in Europe and - not often mentioned - black men and women in Africa?

Just be clear- slavery is wrong, prejudice is wrong, sexism is wrong (from either sex) and repression is wrong.

BBC radio 4 will undoubtedly obsess about this "month" all the way to December. 🙄
Chris, you aren't daft by any means, you're a practical thinker, a doer, outside of the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune etc - you can apply yourself and show learning and invention. I have to ask, and I do so with no mirth or mockery, please, in a thread titled 'black history month', what were you thinking was on the cards with a reply such as this, honestly?

You’re giving him far too much credit here.
