Black History Month

I can honestly say, that I’ve never listened to it ?

What am I missing, angry retired school teachers, shouting at the clouds ?
Home of the Archers. Needs burning and then shooting into space for that alone.

I jest. I do listen to Radio 4 quite often but I tend to swerve/miss the plays, dramas and so forth so I can't comment on Chris' point on the US influence. Some excellent programs despite what Chris might have you believe.

A few of my favourites, past and present.

I don't feel qualified to post in this thread. I'm very much white middle class. I know I have white privilege. I acknowledge that people with white privilege are part of the problem but I don't feel like I'm racist. Is that enough to be part of the solution?

I have a very old school photo from Wirral Grammar School in 1987. There's roughly 1,000 people in the photo. It's one of those massive panoramic ones. There is 1 non-white student and 1 non-white teacher. Black people just didn't exist in my upbringing.

I now work for a ftse100 company that has a very well advertised inclusion and diversity policy yet there are still very few black and ethnic people in my office so as a result I have no black friends. Again I acknowledge my white privilege and that I'm not racist but is that enough to be part of the solution?

Genuine question - Is it enough in 2023 to crack on with life thinking that racism isn't my problem, it's not a part of my world or should I be doing more? If so, how does a middle aged white guy do more?

Educate me GOT
Get one of those hair shirts they used to wear in the Middle Ages. That should do it.

15% roughly of the population are of BAME ethnicity. So all things being equal 15 of your 100 should be there.

That is if that's their chosen career route - which is a big assumption.

Thinking allowed is very good. Enjoy in our time also but depends on the subject matter. Presenter is a Liverpool fan mind you.

For anyone who might have the wrong end of the stick here, Chris isn’t what he’s being painted to be.

He just hates women.
I hate idiots and vacuous word spouts ... and there are plenty of them on the radio male and female. ...which is why I moan about them. I hate the disproportionate time allotted to women on radio and TV.

In all honesty I dislike men and women pretty much equally! I guess it's just that the men don't get to say so much so I have less brought to my attention to complain about.

Did you actually read the reasoning I pointed to? 🤔 Because you asked and I gave it ... right there ... the post above where I said ... "see above"!

Yeah and I thought it didn’t make sense.

You can’t put a podcast on, or five live?

You’re making out like you are forced to watch it. You’ve detailed a thread about black history month into another moan about Womens hour.

It’s a bit grim.

They’ll be wanting a month next too I suppose!

I can't deny- radio 4 produces some excellent stuff. However, the boiling piss inducing hour lasts MORE than an hour and can pop up randomly through the day. Frankly it makes searching for the interesting stuff much more of a minefield.

I didn't mean to ... but if people want to argue a point I can't just let it lie!

I think R4 occupies a tricky space. Maintaining a broad appeal and offering content reflecting a whole host of contemporary issues. I've got little interest in the plays, but I really value much of the current affairs and news reporting, even if I don't necessarily like or agree with it.

Some of the comedy needs refreshing as well, think it can be a bit tired and full of old favourites.
