In the scheme of things I don't think a contract extension for Simms would bankrupt the club and certainly some of the wages would be retrieved from a loan.

Physically he is ready for senior football and I think is now gone from under age football.

That all said he still looks a long way off from being a Premiership footballer to me.

....i think Greenwood at United is 10 months younger than him. DCL wasn’t ready for the PL when he started out but he was involved.

Personally, I think Simms will be transferred but if he’s not then he needs to be training at USMFF and involved in first team squads.
Never realised he was that old, doubt he’s got much value atm, if he’d take a sensible extension might be a decent gamble to see if he can hack it in the championship and maybe add some value if we sell, defo avoid giving him a garbutt/ penno style contract

Just like DCL did....... lol

I suppose your benchmark has to be Ivan Toney.

Went to Newcastle at an early age, wasn’t ready, was loaned out then sold.
Found his level in League One, then stepped up to the Championship and had been excellent.

What harm can it do to give him a 2-3 year deal, go out to a championship club, see if he’s capable and if not, we can always know we’ve tried.

Hes 100% Not Premier League ready, but he can still be a decent player.

I mean surely the benchmark is Jamie Vardy for academy released young player making it to PL champion.

...but you could say that for virtually every every U23 player. Given them contract extensions just in case they turn out to be good.

The reality is, the best ones force their way into the 1st team squad, the others are released. There aren’t very many young professionals that the club release who turn out to be top players.

Posters complain when the likes of Garbutt, Pennington, Galloway, Connolly etc are on big money contracts into their early 20s.

I also complain for that reason.

But he doesn’t need to be here until he’s 23, he’s turned 20 at the turn of the year, and seemingly the next step is a loan to the Championship, and if he doesn’t, we can move him on for a nominal.

I just feel there is still a glimmer of hope that Simms could become decent and if so, we should use that to our advantage.

Yep , agree with that , he is only 20 , we ve offered another contract to Joe Anderson same age, U23s never going to play for the first team. My continued tack with Simms is that he’s been a slow developer but has improved every season , that’s what good coaching, training with the first team, exposure to men’s football is designed to do. He’ll be 21 when his contract ends and snapped up by a Championship club next year on a free if we let him go. He’s the type of player who tests a club regime for youngsters, any team could have brought through the 16 year old Rooney, taking Simms from where he was at 16 to where he is today is an achievement itself, can we take him further is the challenge.

Keep him around next season for the odd cameo? What a complete wasted year of development that would be.

DCL or Richarlison are due a long term injury though seeing they only missed a few games this season...
Plus they're not actually that good a partnership

But he's not PL ready anyway. He's not as good as Moise Kean who also isn't.

I don't think he'll ever make it here but he's doing well on loan so let him try his luck in the Championship and just you never know.

...the club will have a view whether they want to keep him or not.

if they send him on loan again he’ll be close on 22 when he next becomes available to play for us. If we bring in another striker this summer he’ll be down the pecking order. Personally, if he’s still an Everton player next season I’d much prefer him to be training with our coaches and part of match day squads.

We’ve already got Branthwaite & Gibson in similar situation. Utilise them or move them on.

By this logic we could've just moved the others on for a nominal fee as well.
